The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 639, against 637 in March—an increase of 2. The deaths in April were 208, a decrease of 37 on the number in March. Of the total deaths, males contributed 110, females 98. Fifty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 27·88 per cent. of the whole number; 47 of these were under one year of age.

There were sixty-five deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Ten men, 65, 68, 70, 71, 74, 77, 80, 81, 82, 86, and twelve women, 67 (two), 71, 72, 73, 76, 78, 82, 83, 86, 88, 95, died at Auckland; three men, 73 (two), 75, and eight women, 65 (two), 69, 71, 72, 83 (two), 86, at Wellington; eight men, 66, 68, 69, 79, 82, 83, 87, 91, and nine women, 65, 66, 67, 72 (two), 78, 81, 82, 85, at Christchurch; and ten men, 65, 66, 67, 69, 73, 77, 79 (two), 82, 83, and five women, 65, 66, 79, 89, 92, at Dunedin.
