My Lord,—I have the honour to inform you that it will be
so good as to inform your Ministers that on the 2nd of
February the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, in a
private letter, sent to foreign missions, announced publicly
the intention of the Japanese Government to give notice
next year of the termination of existing commercial treaties.

  1. It was added that when this was done the Japanese
    Government would at the proper moment open negotiations
    with the Powers individually for the conclusion of new
    Treaties.

EAST ISLAND CABLE TEMPORARILY INTERRUPTED.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 30th March, 1909.
NOTICE is hereby given that there is at present an
interruption in the cable from East Island, and it
will consequently not be possible for ships to call before the
s.s. “Tutanekai” will be able to repair the cable.
