1907, page 45, mariners are hereby notified that the fixed
green light on the outer end of the Portland New Pier is
obscured so as to be invisible, when approaching from the

Kangaroo Island, Backstairs Passage.—Subsidiary Light,
Cape Willoughby.
With reference to Notice to Mariners No. 2 of 1909, dated
the 28th January, 1909, masters of vessels and others are
hereby informed that the red light mentioned therein is
now exhibited from the lower part of the tower, and shows
over the Scraper Shoal from about south by west until shut
in by the high land of Cape St. Albans, and that the
unwatched light at the last-mentioned cape has been im-
proved, and is now plainly visible, showing white from east-
south-east around by east to west by south, and red from
west by south until obscured by Cape Willoughby.
This affects Admiralty Charts 2389B, 1014, and 25.

President of the Marine Board.

Port Adelaide, 25th February, 1909.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
Gulf St. Vincent.—Troubridge Hill.—Sunken Vessel “Clan
Ranald.”
Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 12 of 1909, navigators
are hereby informed that a cheese-shaped buoy, with staff
and diamond, painted green, has been placed to mark the
sunken wreck of the s.s. “Clan Ranald.” The buoy is
moored about 30 fathoms south-west from the wreck in
10 fathoms of water, and the highest portion of the wreck
has 2½ fathoms over it at L.W.S. tides.
There is also a spar floating vertically attached to the
wreck, the end of which shows about 3 ft. above the surface
at slack water, but disappears during the strength of the
tide. The bearings from the wreck are Troubridge Hill,
E. ½ S. mag., distant about one mile. Approximate posi-
tion: Lat. 35° 10′ S., long. 137° 37′ E.
This affects Admiralty Chart 2389A.
ARTHUR SEARCY,
President of the Marine Board.

Port Adelaide, 18th February, 1909.
QUEENSLAND.
Alteration in Channel, Wide Bay Bar.—Directions for
Crossing.
Notice is hereby given that when crossing the Wide Bay
Bar the square beacons on Hook Point must now be kept in
line bearing S. 75° W. until the triangular beacons on Inskip
come in line bearing S. 45½° W., which will give a minimum
depth of 17 ft. at L.W.O.S.T. (this line will lead 150 ft. east
of the red buoy, which will shortly be removed). A mid-
channel course must then be steered until the front triangular
beacon at Inskip Point is passed, then proceed as hereto-
fore.
Mariners are cautioned that the North Channel, Wide
Bay Bar, is in a dangerous condition, and the greatest care
should be exercised when crossing during bad weather.
Strangers to the locality are cautioned not to attempt the
channel unless during fine weather and daylight.
Charts affected: Nos. 1030 and 1068; “Australia Direc-
tory,” Vol. ii.

Portmaster.
Marine Department,
Brisbane, 26th February, 1909.
Notice to Mariners No. 24 of 1909.
LONGITUDE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NEW AND OLD SURVEY
CHARTS.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 23rd March, 1909.
AS the attention of the Marine Department has been
drawn to the fact of a difference of longitude existing
in the published Admiralty Charts Nos. 2527 and 2528, the
Department would take the opportunity of explaining that
Charts Nos. 2527 (July, 1906), 2543 (February, 1908), and
3565 (vii, 1908) are due to the surveys lately made by
H.M.S. “Penguin,” and on these charts the official
longitude of the Dominion has been adopted, whereas the
other charts still keep to the longitude based on determina-
tion of a few years back. In transferring positions or
courses from one chart to another, therefore, it is advisable
to plot the bearing and distance from some point of land,
rather than to use the actual latitude and longitude given
on the chart.
