No. 25628.—3rd March, 1909.—WINFIELD SCOTT POTTER,
of Mahwah, New Jersey, United States of America, Engineer.
Improvements in manganese steel rails and process of rolling
the same.

Claim.—(1.) The method of working manganese steel
ingots, blooms, billets, or blanks to produce finished shapes,
which consists in heating the metal as desired up to the upper
critical point where the metal becomes weak and tender,
then heating slowly and evenly to a temperature above the
upper critical point to reduce the interior of the ingot or other
metal body to a soft and plastic condition and preserve the
outer surface or skin uncracked, and then cooling the outer
surface or skin to or below the temperature of the interior
to compress and set the metal and prevent rupture of the
metal during the subsequent rolling or forming process,
substantially as described.

[NOTE.—Here follow seven other claims.]
