No. 25524.—4th February, 1909.—WILLIAM PAINTER, of Ruapuna, South Canterbury, New Zealand, Contractor. An improved grass-stripping machine.

Claims.—(1.) In grass-stripping machines of the class described, receptacles for the seed consisting of removable drawers, mounted if desired on rollers or the like, substantially as specified. (2.) In grass-stripping machines of the class described, a frame divided into two portions with a space between them, and a supporting-wheel journaled within such space, substantially as and for the purposes specified. (3.) In grass-stripping machines of the class described, the combination with a frame divided into two portions, and with seed-receptacles one placed within each of such portions, of a double curved deflecting-plate arranged vertically above the concave of the machine and extending at its respective edges in front of the seed-receptacles, substantially as and for the purposes specified. (4.) In grass-stripping machines of the class described, the combination with the beater-drum and spindle of a standard or bearing arranged at about midway between the ends of such spindle and in which the spindle is journaled, substantially as and for the purposes specified. (5.) The improved grass-stripping machine constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described, and as illustrated in the drawings.

No. 25525.—4th February, 1909.—MONOTYPE MACHINE (COLONIAL PATENTS) SYNDICATE, LIMITED, of 43 Fetter Lane, London E.C., England (assignees of John Sellers Bancroft and Mauritz C. Indahl, both Engineers, of Philadelphia, United States of America). Improvements in or relating to automatic justifying mechanism for pattern-controlled composing-machines.

Extract from Specification.—The invention consists, broadly —first, in providing the pattern, record-strip, or controller of an automatic composing-machine with line-measuring and space-number signals; second, in providing the final or automatic composing-machine with a shortage distributing or apportioning system or mechanism controlled by the space-number and line-deficiency signals of the pattern, and operating to automatically adjust the space-dimensioning devices so as to produce spaces of proper dimensions to justify or fill out the line; and, third, in the several minor combinations, arrangements, and constructions of parts to operate as fully described.

No. 25531.—6th February, 1909.—ALEXANDER REEVES, of Kingston, Tasmania, Australia, Speculator. An improved chimney-top.

Claims.—(1.) A rectangular shaft having a top-piece or cap and hooded openings in its sides so arranged that the openings in one pair of opposite sides will alternate with the openings in the other pair of sides, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth. (2.) A rectangular shaft, a top-piece or cap which may or may not have means for admitting or discharging air, and hooded openings in the sides of the shaft arranged, combined, and operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth.

No. 25532.—6th February, 1909.—JAMES ERNEST TATHAM, of “Winifred Villa,” Duke Street, Balmain, near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, A.M.I.M.E., Gas Engineer. Improved contrivance for holding needles to reels of sewing-thread.

Extract from Specification.—This improved contrivance for holding needles to reels of sewing-thread consists of a magnetically charged disc or film of metal removable affixed to the end of the reel or spool of thread so that its capability of magnetically holding a needle will keep said needle attached to the reel or spool.

Extract from Specification.—The process designed consists in first deodorising the fish and then in gradually removing the latent heat while submitting the fish to the action of suitable sterilisers.

No. 25550.—9th February, 1909.—ROBERT ADAMS, of Emerald Street, Theobalds Road, London, England, Engineer. Improvements in self-cleansing filters for domestic water-supply.

Claims.—(1.) A filter of the type set forth in which a rotary distributor or distributors is or are mounted within the filter in the main water-service channel so as to be rotated by the flow of water and thereby distribute the water evenly over the whole surface or surfaces of the filtering-medium in order to thoroughly cleanse the same.

No. 25579.—16th February, 1909.—CHARLES MARTIN BEATTIE, of 59 Stone Street, Rochester, New York, United States of America, Auditor. Improvements in or relating to telephone-apparatus.

Extract from Specification.—The present invention relates to telephony, and it has for its object to provide an arrangement of apparatus for automatically recording the length of time a subscriber’s telephone-instrument circuit is busy or in use, either in receiving or despatching messages, or the aggregate time consumed in despatching or receiving all messages occurring during a given period; said apparatus comprising generally a meter or recording-device which is actuated when a telephone-circuit is closed to show the number of calls, and a separate meter for recording the length of time said line is in use. The invention has for its further object to provide a meter or recording-device associated with a subscriber’s telephone-instrument circuit which is operated in conjunction with apparatus located at the central office or exchange, which is designed to actuate the meter at regular intervals of time while the instrument-circuit is connected for talking purposes with another circuit. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
