The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 573, against 645 in December—a decrease of 72. The deaths in January were 214, a decrease of 16 on the number in December. Of the total deaths, males contributed 123, females 91. Forty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 22·43 per cent. of the whole number; 35 of these were under one year of age.

There were sixty-three deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Nine men, 65 (two), 66, 68, 72, 73, 76 (two), 82, and five women, 66, 67, 69, 71, 74, died at Auckland; five men, 65, 66, 73 (two), 84, and five women, 66, 70, 72, 74, 85, at Wellington; nine men, 66, 67, 68, 70, 73 (two), 82 (two), 85, and five women, 70, 71, 76, 84, 94, at Christchurch; and seventeen men, 65, 68 (two), 70, 71 (two), 72, 73, 74 (two), 75, 76, 77, 79, 81, 82, 89, and eight men, 72, 73 (two), 80 (two), 85, 88, 89, at Dunedin.
