tension substantially in its own plane. (2.) In an ore-con-
centrator, a concentrating surface having a reciprocating
movement whose tendency is to carry the material longitudinally forward toward the tail or foot of the table, means
arranged to operatively support said surface and place the same
under tension substantially in its own plane, and means for
increasing said tension at one end of the reciprocating movement. (3.) In an ore-concentrator, a concentrating table
or surface having a movement whose tendency is to carry the
material longitudinally forward toward the tail or foot of the
table, and flexible tension means extending from opposite
edges of the same to operatively support such concentrating

No. 25112.-20th October, 1908.-Dr. JOHN ALTON HARRISS, of 141 Riverside Drive, New York, United States of America, Physician (assignee of James Smith Laiier, of West Point, Georgia, United States of America, Inventor). Improvements in mail receiving and delivering apparatus.

Extract from Specification.-This invention relates to improvements in mail receiving and delivering apparatus, and more particularly to the type designed to facilitate the collection and delivery of mail by a mounted carrier without requiring him to leave his seat. Among the objects in view is the provision of means for facilitating the movement of a container into a carriage, or otherwise away from its normal support, and the returning of the same to its normal position without injury to the container or the support. Another object in view is the provision of sustaining means for a container, a support therefor, and means between the sustaining means and support for causing the container to move by gravity to its normal position after having been moved away from the same.

[NorE.-The above extract from the specification is inserted in place of the claims.]

No. 25189. - 5th November, 1908. - HENRY SPENCER SPACKMAN, of Ardmore, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, United States of America, Engineer. Improvements relating to cement-burning apparatus.

Claims.-(1.) In cement-burning apparatus, an elongated rotary kiln mounted at a slight inclination, means to feed cement material into the upper end of said kiln, means to rotate said kiln to carry the material up the ascending side of the same and agitate and gradually feed said material downward through said kiln, a burner-tube for injecting heated gaseous carbonaceous fuel into said kiln, and means to effect the entry into said kiln of air for combustion of said fuel to produce an elongated luminous flame in said kiln and thereby heat and clinker the same material by radiation. (2.) In cement-burning apparatus, an elongated rotary kiln mounted at a slight inclination, means to feed cement material into the upper end of said kiln, means to rotate said kiln to carry the charge of material up the ascending side of the same and agitate the material and gradually feed the same down through said kiln, an air-preheating clinker-cooler receiving the intensely heated cement-clinker from said rotary kiln, and heating the air passing through said cooler and into said kiln to form an envelope of highly heated air for combustion, substantially enclosing the burning fuel, and means to feed into said kiln a jet of carbonaceous fuel to produce a luminous flame therein, heating and clinkering the material therein by radiation. (3.) In cement-burning apparatus, a rotary kiln, a hood at the lower end of said kiln, a plurality of producers closely adjacent to said kiln, gas-connections having non-conducting lining between said producers and said kiln to feed producer-gas into said kiln without undesirable cooling or deposition losses, said connections comprising a substantially horizontal gas-pipe connected with said producers, a burner-tube extending in said kiln, a riser connected with said burner-tube and extending on either side of said gas-pipe and clean-outs in said rise, substantially in line with said burner and gas-pipe.

[Note.--This is an application under section 106 of "The Patents Act, 1889," the date given being the official date of the application in Great Britain.]

Claims.--(1.) As a new article of manufacture, a sensitive photographic surface containing a halogen salt and a substance such as set forth which is incapable of reduction in the light after its oxidation by the halogen set free by exposure of the surface to light, which will not reduce, in the dark, the sensitive salt present, and which will absorb the halogen as rapidly as it is set free by the action of light on exposure. (2.) A sensitive photographic surface such as referred to in the preceding claim comprising a vehicle, one or more halogen salts, as for example one or more silver halogen salts, and a salt or derivative of hydrazine or hydroxylamine.
