Notice to Mariners No. 91 of 1908.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Board of Trade, London, are published for general information.

AFRICA.

EAST COAST.—DELAGOA BAY.—The iron pyra. beacon, in 25° 58′ S., 32° 54½′ E., on Gibbon Pt., Elephant Isl., has fallen down. Oct.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

SURABAYA STRAIT.—The white conical buoy No. 1, surm. by a ball, in the nrn. entr. to the strait, 9½ miles N. 15° E. from Cape Piring Lt.-h. (7° 2′ S., 112° 45′ E.); and the black conical buoy No. 2, surm. by a ball, 9½ miles N. 20° E. from the lt.-h., have been withdrawn. The pilot-vessel has been moved about 1 mile S.-erd., and now lies in 6° 52¾′ S., 112° 44½′ E., with Sembilangan and Cape Piring Lt.-hs. in line, S. 17° W., 10 miles from the latter. Oct.

MADURA STRAIT.—Panarukan lt. (7° 41¼′ S., 113° 56′ E.) has been altered from F. white to Fl. white every 3 secs.—fl. 1 sec., ecl. 2 secs. Oct.

BORNEO.—LABUAN ISL.—The beacon near the nrn. end of the isl. has been removed, and a new beacon, mast surm. by a barrel, is est. in 5° 23′ N., 115° 14½′ E., on a hill 2⁶⁄₁₀ cables E. from site of prev. beacon. A chimney, conspicuous when approaching the isl. from the nrd., is on Coal Pt., 10³⁄₁₀ cables N. 84° E. from site of prev. beacon. Oct.

MALLEWALLÉ CHAN.—The beacon charted in the chan. 4⁴⁄₁₀ miles S. 52° E. from Sandy Isl. beacon is not in that position, but is an iron pole surm. by a red sphere, in 6° 45½′ N., 117° 39¾′ E., on wrn. edge of reef, S.-wrd of Sandy Isl. beacon, with Sandy Isl. beacon, N. 38° W., 4⁶⁄₁₀ miles, and Leonan Reef △, S. 60° W. Oct.

The 2 following small coral shoals, with 9 to 10 fms. muddy btm. around, exist in the chan.: (a.) Carrying 9 ft., with Kukuban Islet △ (6° 56′ N., 117° 24½′ E.), N. 35° W., 2¹⁄₁₀ miles, and S. extr. of Tebakkan Isl., N. 52° E. (b.) Carrying 20 ft., with Kukuban Islet /\, N. 37° W., 2³⁄₁₀ miles, and S. extr. of Tebakkan Isl., N. 49° E. Oct.

GAYA ISL.—A small coral shoal, carrying 2¾ fms., with 18 to 25 fms. around, exists in 5° 58½′ N., 115° 51′ E., with N. pt. of Gaya Isl., N. 65° E., 9½ miles, and Pulo Laiang, S. 9° E. Oct.

CHINA SEA.

DAIREN WAN.—A shoal, on which the s.s. “Miyo Maru” struck, 50 yds. long N. and S., 20 yds. wide, carrying about 1½ fms., hard btm., exists in 38° 56½′ N., 121° 38½′ E., in the bay, 6⁷⁄₁₀ cables N. 65° W. from the storm sig.-station on the Railway Pier, and on the edge of the 3-fms. contour. A red pyra. buoy marked “B” in white is moored about ½ cable nrd. of the shoal. No vessel, with the exception of small craft, should attempt to pass srd. of this buoy. Oct.

CAUTION.—From 15th Aug. to 31st Dec., 1908, explosives will be in use in an area marked by red flags at the nrn. end of the ern. wharf at Darien (38° 56′ N., 121° 39′ E.). Oct.

RYOJUN KO (PORT ARTHUR) APPROACH.—On 5th Aug. a wrk., marked by a red cyl. buoy, moored in 38° 45¾′ N., 121° 16½′ E., in the approach, 1³⁄₁₀ miles S. 8° E. from Lutin Rk. Some wooden buoys, each carrying a red and white flag, are est. in the vicinity of the above buoy. Oct.

LUZON.—MANILA HARB.—The 2 wrks., about 68 yds. apart N.W. and S.E., erd. of the opening between the 2 breakwaters at the entr. to the harb., have been removed. Oct.

AUSTRALIA.

East Coast.

MORETON BAY ENTR.—The north banks are reported to have extended about 2 cables to the nrd., and the black buoy N.W. 1, surm. by a black flag, has been moved 2 cables nrd., and now lies in 26° 52′ S., 153° 10′ E., about 21½ cables N. 56° E. from the front Bribie Isl. leading-lt. Bribie Isl. lts. in line lead very close to the nrn. edge of North Banks. Oct.

The positions and numbers of some of the buoys in the N.W. and Main Chans. of the bay are incorrectly shown on certain copies of the Admiralty Charts. The buoyage is now as follows: (a.) N.W. 1 buoy, black with black flag, in 26° 52′ S., 153° 10′ E., 21½ cables N. 56° E. from Bribie Isl. front leading-lt. (b.) N.W. 3 buoy, black, with topmark on wrn. side of 3-fm. patch 6⁶⁄₁₀ miles S. 53° E. from same leading-lt. (c.) Skirmish Bank buoy, red with flag, on N. extr. of bank 7½ miles N. 84° W. from Comboyuro Pt. lt.-h. (d.) N.W. 5 buoy, black lt.-buoy exh. a F. white lt. on wrn. end of Spitfire Banks, 5⁴⁄₁₀ miles N. 84° W. from the same lt.-h. The lt.-buoy shown on certain copies of Chart No. 1670A, about 3½ cables N.-erd. of this position, should be expunged. (e.) N.W. 4 buoy, red lt.-buoy, exh. an occ. white lt., at nrn. end of wrn. banks 3⁷⁄₁₀ miles S. 80° W. from Comboyuro Lt-h. (f.) N.W. 7 buoy, black lt.-buoy exh. a F. white lt. on wrn. side of Yule Bank, 2⁸⁄₁₀ miles S. 54° W. from same lt.-h. (g.) E. knoll buoy (No. 4), red, on ern. side of shoal, 1²⁄₁₀ miles S. 59° W. from the Cowan Cowan Lt.-h. Oct.

CAIRNS HARBOUR.

INNER ROUTE.—The beacon marking Pea (p) Reef (13° 32¾′ S., 143° 39¼′ E.) has disappeared. It will probably be shortly restored. Oct.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

S. PACIFIC OCEAN.—STEAMSHIP ROUTES.—The undermentioned routes in the S. Indian and S. Pacific Oceans have been adopted by the steamships of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company, and the White Star Line. The respective meridians are to be crossed as given below. 1. South Indian Ocean: 40° E. in 43° 10′ S.; 50° E. in 44° 50′ S.; 60° E. in 45° 25′ S.; 70° E. in 45° 40′ S.; 80° E. in 45° 55′ S.; 90° E. in 46° 30′ S.; 100° E. in 47° 0′ S.; 110° E. in 46° 45′ S.; 120° E. in 46° 20′ S.; 2. South Pacific Ocean: 165° W. in 48° 30′ S.; 160° W. in 49° 0′ S.; 150° W. in 49° 30′ S.; 140° W. in 50° 0′ S.; 130° W. in 50° 50′ S.; 120° W. in 51° 30′ S.; 110° W. in 52° 10′ S.; 100° W. in 52° 45′ S.; 90° W. in 54° 0′ S.; 80° W. in 55° 0′ S. Oct.

SOUTH AMERICA.

MONTE VIDEO APPROACH.—The mooring-buoy 2 cables N. 3° E.; and the red lt.-buoy exh. a fl. red lt. 5½ cables S. 65° W., respectively from Flores Isl. Lt.-h. (34° 57′ S., 55° 55½′ W.) are reported not to exist. Oct.

MONTE VIDEO BAY.—The fog.-sig. of Indio Pt. lt.-v. (35° 7½′ S., 57° 6¼′ W.) has been replaced by a steam fog-siren, giving 1 blast of 10 secs. dura. every 30 secs., and a steam fog-siren, giving 1 blast of 10 secs. dura. every min., is est. on board the Chico Bank lt.-v. (34° 46′ S., 57° 29¾′ W.). Oct.

RIO DE JANEIRO HARBOUR.—The F. red lt. exh. from a small lt.-h., in 22° 52¾′ S., 43° 10′ W., on Feiticeiras Bank, has been replaced by a fl. red lt. every 6 secs. (U), elev. 21 ft., exh. from a white iron standard. Oct.

PATOS LAKE.—The lt.-h. in 31° 46′ S., 51° 50′ W., on the bank near Estreito Pt., which was destroyed by fire, has been rebuilt on its prev. site, and the lt., F. white, elev. 49 ft., R. 12 miles, is re-exhib. Oct.

SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN.

ICE.—On 12th March, 1908, the ship “Glenalvon” saw 2 bergs, one of them about 4 miles long, in 50° 10′ S., 50° 30′ W. On 13th March the “Loch Torridon” passed 6 large bergs from 1½ to ½ miles in extent, and from 500 ft. to 300 ft. high, from 50° S., 45° W., to 47° S., 43° W. June.

On 18th May, 1908, the barque “Heathfield” passed a berg about 3 miles in circumference and 80 ft. to 100 ft. high in 48° S., 52° W. Oct.

Notice to Mariners No. 93 of 1908.

NAPIER HARBOUR.—CHANGE IN POSITION OF BUOY OFF THE END OF BREAKWATER.

Wellington, N.Z., 27th November, 1908.

THE Napier Harbour Board have notified that the black buoy which marks the limits of the breakwater foundations (referred to in Notice to Mariners No. 51 of 28th June, 1906) is to be removed 85 ft. to the westward, and this will be done about the end of November.

The passage between the black buoy and the inner red buoy on the Auckland Rock shoal will now be 415 ft.
