The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 673, against 599 in September—an increase of 74. The deaths in October were 216, an increase of 2 on the number in September. Of the total deaths, males contributed 116, females 100. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 25 per cent. of the whole number; 40 of these were under one year of age.

There were fifty-seven deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Six men, 67, 72, 75 (two), 80, 88, and nine women, 66, 69 (two), 70, 79, 82, 96, 99, died at Auckland; three men, 62, 71, 82, and four women, 70, 76 (two), 80, at Wellington; seven men, 65, 68, 72, 73, 75, 79, 82, and eight women, 65, 66, 68, 73, 75, 76, 91, 93, at Christchurch; and fourteen men, 65, 67 (two), 68, 70 (two), 73, 75, 76, 77, 79, 80, 82, 86, and six women, 69, 70, 71, 74, 75, 76, at Dunedin.
