LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION.
The Waharangi Block is situated on the Wanganui River between the Ohoutahi Block (the Catholic Mission Farm at Jerusalem) and Pipiriki Township, which it adjoins. It runs back from the river, along both sides of the Pipiriki-Raetihi Road, till it joins the Morikau No. 2 Block, which was subdivided and leased about a year ago, the Morikau No. 2 Block forming the eastern and southern boundaries. On the north it is bounded by the Huikumu Block (Mr. Corrie's run), and on the north-west by the Ngaporo and Waharangi No. 6 Blocks, both being Native lands. All the sections have good dray-road access (except those fronting the Wanganui River, where a road is proposed to be laid off connecting Pipiriki with Jerusalem) along the Pipiriki-Raetihi and Huikumu Roads.
Small flats and easy-sloping ground have been reserved along the Raetihi Road for homestead-sites and small paddocks, and access from them to the back country through the proposed scenery reserves will be reserved.
The whole block is forest-clad, the bush comprising principally tawa, rata, rimu, tawhero, matai, maire, &c., with a dense undergrowth of rangiora, mahoe, houhou, karamu, kotukutuku, supplejack, &c.
The formation is papa and shell-rock, and the quality of the soil is good.
The block is well watered by numerous streams, a number of them being gorges.
The elevation above sea-level ranges from about 50 ft. on the Wanganui River to 2035 ft. at Waharangi Trig. Station.
The sections are being surveyed at present, and good fencing-lines along spurs and ridges will be taken as boundaries.
It is proposed to reserve a considerable portion of land along the Wanganui River and the Pipiriki-Raetihi Road for scenic purposes, and the approximate boundaries and areas are shown on lithograph; but should the Scenery Commissioners not acquire this land within, say, one year, the portions shown within each section will be added to that section, and it will be made a condition of lease that the selector will require to take the area at the same rental per acre as is being paid for the area now offered.
Maps and terms and conditions of the leases may be obtained from the Under-Secretary for Native Affairs, Wellington, and from the office of the Aotea District Maori Land Board, Wanganui.
THOS. W. FISHER,
President.
