Maori Lands in the Hawke's Bay Land District for Lease by Public Tender under the Provisions of “The Maori Lands Administration Act, 1900,” and its Amendments.

THE undermentioned blocks of land, situate in the Counties of Waiapu, Wairoa, and Whakatane, will be offered for lease by public tender for a term of twenty-five years, with a right of renewal for a further term of twenty-five years. Applications will be received for the same at the office of the Tairawhiti District Maori Land Board, Gisborne, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Wednesday, the 23rd day of December, 1908, where plans and full particulars may be obtained.

SCHEDULE.

WHAKAANGIANGI 6A2, 1A2, AND 1B2 BLOCKS.—MANGAOPORO SURVEY DISTRICT.—HAWKE’S BAY LAND DISTRICT.

Soil good; land much broken. Entirely covered with heavy bush, consisting principally of tawa, with an admixture of rimu, matai, and kahikatea. About fourteen miles from Port Awanui. About 500 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.

WHAKAANGIANGI 3B BLOCK. — BLOCK IV, MANGAOPORO SURVEY DISTRICT.—HAWKE’S BAY LAND DISTRICT.

Soil generally good; land broken. Entirely covered with bush, consisting principally of tawa, with an admixture of rimu, matai, and kahikatea. About seventeen miles from Port Awanui. It has an altitude of from about 500 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.

AHIRAU NO. 2 BLOCK (UNSURVEYED).—BLOCKS XII AND XVI, MATAKAOA SURVEY DISTRICT. — HAWKE’S BAY LAND DISTRICT.

For application by the Maori owners of the land in the first instance. Soil good. Surface broken, and covered with bush. About seven miles from Te Araroa. About one mile of road required to connect with dray-road. About 800 ft. above sea-level.

Sections 5 and 6 have been set aside for application by the Maori owners of the land.

Section 4 contains about 250 acres, more or less, of old river-terraces, the tops of which are more or less flat, and are for the most part composed of bouldery-shingle, with an admixture of alluvial soil on top. The remainder consists of one large ridge branching into a few spurs, the lower portions of which are covered with scrub. The upper portions of the spurs and the remainder of the range is covered with heavy bush, consisting principally of tawa on the lower and tawai on the higher country. These bushes are mixed with a small proportion of rimu, matai, kahikatea, and a little to ara. The soil is good on the lower country, varying gradually to light as it approaches the higher elevations. About eighteen miles by good dray-road from Tuparoa. There is a range of altitude from about 600 ft. to 3,000 ft. above sea-level. It is watered by the Tapuaeroa River and the Mangapoi and Raparapaririki Streams.

AHIAPARUA BLOCK (UNSURVEYED).—BLOCKS VII AND VIII, RAUKUMARA EAST SURVEY DISTRICT, HAWKE’S BAY LAND DISTRICT.

Soil light, land covered with bush. About 3,000 ft. above sea-level. About twenty-eight miles from Tuparoa.

WAIPAOA NO. 5 BLOCK.—BLOCKS I, II, III, V, VI, VII, IX, X, AND XI.—TUAHU SURVEY DISTRICT.—HAWKE’S BAY LAND DISTRICT.

Altitude, from 2,100 ft. to 3,450 ft. All birch-clad pastoral country, comprising a large swampy flat, partly burnt, easy downs and steep broken hills; light soil, well watered. About forty-five miles from Wairoa, via Waikaremoana — forty miles by coach-road, remainder formed pack-track.

Altitude, from 2,100 ft. to 3,500 ft. Mostly birch country, with tawa and mixed bush in the watershed of the Waipaoa Stream, comprising a big birch flat along the main road; undulating hills and rough, broken country; light soil, well watered. About forty-five miles from Wairoa, via Waikaremoana—forty miles by coach-road, remainder formed pack-track.

Altitude, from 1,100 ft. to 3,300 ft. Rough, broken country, tawa and mixed bush in the valleys, with birch on the ridges; fair soil, well watered. Distant about forty-nine miles from Wairoa, via Ruakituri—twenty-six miles by coach-road, remainder formed pack-track.

NOTE.—Sections 12 and 13 have been brought under the provisions of subsection (9) of section 17 of the Maori Land Claims Adjustment and Laws Amendment Act, 1907, by special resolution of the Board.

Altitude, from 900 ft. to 3,300 ft. Steep, broken country, well sheltered, sunny faces and slopes, mostly tawa and mixed bush, with birch on the higher ridges; well watered; good soil. Distant about forty-eight miles from Wairoa, via Ruakituri—twenty-six miles by coach-road, remainder formed pack-track.

Altitude, 800 ft. to 3,300 ft. Comprises rough, broken country, with well-sheltered sunny slopes and faces; mostly tawa and mixed bush, with birch on the high ridges; well watered. Distant about forty-five miles from Wairoa, via Ruakituri—twenty-six miles by coach-road, remainder formed pack-track.

Altitude, 650 ft. to 2,200 ft. Comprises steep face from Ngapakira Cliff, with easy slopes and flats towards the river; well sheltered and sunny; good soil; well watered; about 150 acres felled and in grass, remainder tawa and mixed bush. Distant about forty-three miles from Wairoa, via Ruakituri—twenty-six miles by coach-road, remainder formed pack-track. Preference will be given in this Section 16 to applications by the Maori owners.
