CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1907, was estimated to be 2,724, of whom 59 were females.
REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 20,763, or at the rate of 2·28 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 15,033, and excess of arrivals over departures 5,730.
The birth-rate for the Dominion in 1907 was 27·31 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 10·95, as against 27·08 and 9·31 respectively in 1906.
The deaths in 1907 (10,067) were greater than the number registered in 1906 (8,339) by 1,728, and the rate per 1,000 rose from 9·31 to 10·95.
The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1907 is estimated at 8,170, giving a rate of 8·89 per 1,000 of the mean population, against 7,592 and 8·48, the actual number and rate in 1906.
The fluctuations of the birth, death, and marriage rates for the last ten years are as under:—
