The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 599, against 627 in August—a decrease of 28. The deaths in September were 214, a decrease of 23 on the number in August. Of the total deaths, males contributed 110, females 104. Fifty-three of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 24·77 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were under one year of age.

There were eighty deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Seventeen men, 65 (two), 66, 71 (two), 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 80, 83, 85, 87, 89, and fifteen women, 67, 68 (two), 70 (two), 72, 73, 81 (two), 82, 83, 85 (two), 89, 93, died at Auckland; four men, 67, 73 (two), 86, and eight women, 66, 67, 68, 72, 76, 82, 87, 91, at Wellington; eight men, 68, 69, 71, 73, 76, 77 (two), 87, and six women, 67, 72 (two), 74, 75, 82, at Christchurch; and fourteen men, 68, 69, 70, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77 (two), 78, 80 (two), 88, 89, and eight women, 66, 70, 72, 73, 74, 75, 77, 88, at Dunedin.
