The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 627, against 583 in July—an increase of 44. The deaths in August were 237, a decrease of 11 on the number in July. Of the total deaths, males contributed 128, females 109. Forty-six of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 19.41 per cent. of the whole number; 35 of these were under one year of age.

There were seventy-three deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Ten men, 65 (three), 66, 68, 71, 78, 81, 83, 84, and eleven women, 65, 68 (two), 70 (two), 73, 77, 78, 79, 89, 96, died at Auckland; eleven men, 66, 68 (two), 69, 70 (two), 74, 76, 77, 78, 85, and six women, 75 (two), 77, 78, 79, 90, at Wellington; eight men, 70 (two), 71, 75, 80, 81 (two), 82, and seven women, 67, 68, 70, 71, 74, 75, 76, at Christchurch; and twelve men, 65, 66, 69, 70, 73, 74, 75, 78, 81 (two), 84, 85, and eight women, 67, 70, 71, 72 (two), 73 (two), 89, at Dunedin.
