SUMMARY FOR JUNE, 1908.

The weather during the month was on the whole milder than usual. The greater humidity of the atmosphere contributed both to a higher temperature and a good winter rainfall. This was over the average in the South Island and on the western aspects of the North Island, but on the east coast and in some of the southern parts of the North Island it was below the average of former years. The barometer was subject to considerable fluctuations, having a range in the extreme south of 1½ in. during the month. The most general rainfall was experienced during the last week, when a westerly area of low pressure of great extent prevailed everywhere. On the 5th and again on the 9th low pressures affected the North Island particularly, but a sudden fall in the South brought the heaviest wind, accompanied with considerable rain, on the 11th and 12th. From this date the barometer rose steadily in the South until the 17th. Pressure, however, did not increase so much in the North, and particularly off East Cape, probably on account of low-pressure areas passing eastward of New Zealand.
