The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rate at Auckland and Dunedin, but raises it at Wellington and Christchurch.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 572, against 562 in April—an increase of 10. The deaths in May were 212, an increase of 4 on the number in April. Of the total deaths, males contributed 117, females 95. Forty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 22·64 per cent. of the whole number; 38 of these were under one year of age.

There were sixty-four deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Nine men, 66 (two), 72, 74, 75, 78 (two), 80, 83, and twelve women, 66, 68, 73, 74 (two), 75, 76 (three), 79 (two), 99, died at Auckland; four men, 65, 68 (two), 70, and four women, 65 (two), 78, 82, at Wellington; ten men, 66 (two), 67, 69, 71, 73 (two), 75 (two), 76, and two women, 69, 89, at Christchurch; and sixteen men, 67 (two), 68, 69, 71 (two), 72 (two), 73, 75 (three), 76, 79, 80 (two), and seven women, 66, 68, 70, 71, 76, 78, 95, at Dunedin.
