No. 22491.—28th February, 1907.—UNITED SHOE MACHINERY COMPANY, of Paterson, State of New Jersey, United States of America, a corporation duly organized under the laws of said State of New Jersey, carrying on business as Shoe-machinery Manufacturers at 205 Lincoln Street, Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America (the assignees of Albert Arthur Wadsworth, Machine-operator, and Frederick Shortland, Machinist, both of Rushden, Northamptonshire, England). Improved work-feeding and work-guiding mechanisms for shoe-machines.*
Extract from Specification.—A feature of the present invention contemplates the combination in a boot or shoe sole fastener-driving machine of a work-feeding device that comprises a work-feeder which engages the tread-face of the sole of a boot or shoe that is supported internally upon a horn or like device, with means to maintain the work-feeder in contact with the sole, and means to automatically increase the pressure of the work-feeder upon the sole during the feed-stroke. The work-feeder may or may not be so formed as to guide the boot or shoe by the channel that in some classes of work is formed in the tread-face of the sole. The work-feeder may be maintained yieldingly in contact with the sole, and means may be provided to automatically vary by the reciprocating-means or otherwise the said yielding pressure upon the sole during both the feed-stroke and return-stroke. The invention also comprises the combination with the reciprocating feeding-device hereinbefore described of a yieldingly-supported guide adapted to engage the upper adjacent to the sole of the shoe being operated upon. This yieldingly-supported guide may be employed in a machine in which there is a feed-wheel that engages the sole edge of the boot, and the said guide may be adapted to enshroud the feed-wheel and engage the feather of the boot when certain classes of work are being operated upon.

No. 22498.—27th February, 1907.—ROWLAND EDGAR REED, of Convent Street, Oakleigh, Victoria, Australia, Professor of Music. Automatic music-turner.*
Extracts from Specification.—This invention has been devised for the purpose of providing an automatic music-leaf turner, which will turn over one or more sheets of music accurately and instantaneously, and which may be fitted to any description of music-stand. . . . In operation the music is placed in engagement with the clips 34. Each leaf of the music-book is then attached to one of the clips or clasps 14, the first leaf being held by the clasp attached to the highest arm 8, the second to the next lowest arm, and so on. When the musician wishes to turn a leaf over, by pressing on the finger-piece 28 the pawl 29 pushes the sliding-piece 18 down until the shield 19 disengages the top arm. This arm immediately springs across to the left-hand side of the frame, carrying with it the first leaf of the music. This operation continues until all the arms carrying the leaves have been released. To place the arms back to their former position the metal strip 30 is pushed down the groove 32 as far as possible. This action throws the pawl 29 out of engagement with the teeth. The sliding-piece is then pushed up along the groove until the shield 19 holds the arms 8 in position. In lieu of the centre clips 34 for holding the music an elastic band or bands may be passed through the centre of the music, being attached to the cross-piece 7 and the bottom piece 3.
[NOTE.—The above extracts from the specification are inserted in place of the claims.]

(2.) In bridges of the type described and having main suspension cables, the combination with such cables of secondary cables secured at their ends to the respective abutments or towers and curved upwards above each main cable at the middle of the span, and struts and bracings connecting together the two cables on each side of the bridge, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
