The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

† Populations of Wellington, Onslow, and Christchurch given according to alterations of boundaries since January.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 575, against 600 in August—a decrease of 25. The deaths in September were 280, a decrease of 24 on the number in August. Of the total deaths, males contributed 151, females 129. Seventy-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 27·86 per cent. of the whole number; 50 of these were under one year of age.

There were ninety deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Thirteen men, 65, 66, 67 (two), 70, 71 (two), 72, 73, 79, 80, 81, 83, and fourteen women, 70 (two), 71, 72, 73, 78, 79 (three), 82, 84, 85, 86, 87, died at Auckland; thirteen men, 67 (two), 68 (two), 69, 70 (three), 71, 77 (two), 84, 89, and seven women, 71 (two), 74, 81, 83, 84, 86, at Wellington; six men, 68, 73, 75, 77, 78, 82, and twelve women, 65 (two), 68, 69, 71, 72, 73, 74 (two), 77, 80, 87, at Christchurch; and twelve men 65 (two), 66 (two), 67, 76, 77, 78, 79 (two), 81, 85, and thirteen women, 65, 67, 69, 70, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77, 82, 85 (two), 86, at Dunedin.

The Old Government Buildings (depicted) were completed in 1876 and initially housed the entire Wellington-based civil service as well as the entire New Zealand Cabinet. The Executive Council met there until 1948.
