CHINA SEA, ETC.

WUSUNG RIVER.—The following regulations are in force, and must be strictly adhered to by mariners in order to prevent accidents to vessels crossing the inner and outer bars of the Wusung River: 1. A careful look-out is to be kept on approaching the Wusung bars, by inward-bound vessels when about a mile below the outer bar, and by outward-bound vessels when abreast of the srn. end of Gough Isl. : (a) vessels having the tide against them must wait for vessels having a fair tide; (b) overtaking vessels must regulate their speed to allow overtaken vessels to clear the bars first. 2. Captains and pilots are not to attempt to cross either bar when the sigs. at Wusung (31° 23′ N., 121° 29′ E.) indic. less water than their vessels are drawing. Sometimes, however, a greater depth can be obtained by not following the bar leading-marks. Captains and pilots desiring to avail themselves of this information should apply to the Harb.-master’s Office at Shanghai, or to the Berthing Officer at Wusung shortly before they wish to cross the bar. 3. Vessels anchoring outside Wusung must take up a berth well clear of leading-marks over the outer bar in order to avoid all risk of collision with vessels crossing the bar. Aug.

SHANTUNG.—SANGKAU BAY.—The s.s. “Hino Maru,” drawing 18 ft., is reported to have struck on a shoal in approx. 37° 6¹⁄₄′ N., 122° 29¹⁄₂′ E., in the bay, about 3⁷⁄₁₀ miles N. 85° E. from Lao Shan Peak (545 ft.). This shoal has been charted as a rk. carrying less than 6 ft., and marked P.D. Aug.

The following dangers have been searched for unsucc., and have been expunged from the charts : a. The shoal of 2¹⁄₂ fms. in approx. 22° 7′ N., 120° 41′ E. ; 19 fms. has been obtained over this position. b. The bank of 9 fms., marked P.D., in approx. 22° 8′ N., 120° 39′ E. ; 67 fms. was obtained over this position. Aug.

NAN WAN.—a. A shoal, carrying 3¹⁄₂ fms., exists in Taihanroku anchorage, 1¹⁄₂ cables S. 25° E. from East Rk. This shoal is connected to the nrd. with East Rk., but to the srd. it is steep-to, the depth increasing suddenly to 12 fms. b. A rk., ¹⁄₂ cable long N.-ely. and S.-wly. and ¹⁄₄ cable broad, carrying 3 fms., steep-to, exists in approx. 21° 57¹⁄₂′ N., 120° 45¹⁄₄′ E., in Taihanroku anchorage, with West Rk. S. 55° W., 3³⁄₄ cables, and Baan Rk. N. 1° E. c.
