Notice of Acceptance of Complete Specifications.

COMPLETE specifications relating to the undermentioned applications for Letters Patent have been accepted, and are open to public inspection at this office. Any person may, at any time within two months from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing of opposition to the grant of any such patent. Such notice must set forth the particular grounds of objection, and be in duplicate. A fee of 10s. is payable thereon.

No. 20914.—29th March, 1906.—ERNEST SMITH BALDWIN and HENRIE HAMPTON RAYWARD, trading as “Baldwin and Rayward,” of 71 Lambton Quay, Wellington, New Zealand, Patent Attorneys (nominees of John Henry Holman and James Miners Holman, of Camborne, Cornwall, England, Engineers). Improvements in or connected with winches or hoists principally for use in mines.*

Claims.—(1.) A winch or hoist adjustably mounted upon a stretcher-bar adapted to be placed either horizontally or vertically, and provided with set or adjusting screws, substantially as described and as illustrated in the drawings. (2.) A winch or hoist, combined with a stretcher-bar and a clamp for adjustably securing said winch or hoist to said bar, substantially as and for the purposes specified, and as illustrated in the drawings. (3.) The combination and arrangement of parts constituting the improved winch or hoist described, said parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified, and as illustrated in the drawings.

No. 21730.—3rd September, 1906.—ALFRED JAMES BORDER, of Wellington, New Zealand, Electrician. An improved process for bleaching flax.

Claims.—(1.) The improved process for bleaching flax, the same consisting in subjecting the flax to the action of the gases given off with the exhaust from internal-combustion engines, substantially as specified. (2.) The improved process for bleaching flax, the same consisting in submitting the flax to the action of the gases given off with the exhaust of internal-combustion engines, combined with water-vapour produced by the admission of water in a fine state of division to the exhaust-pipe, substantially as specified. (3.) In the process for bleaching flax, described in claim 1, the treatment of the flax, before being subjected to the action of the exhaust-gases, by a combined chlorine and alkaline solution, substantially as specified.

No. 21731.—3rd September, 1906.—ALFRED JAMES BORDER, of Wellington, New Zealand, Electrician. An improved process for drying flax and the like.

Claims.—(1.) The improved process for drying flax and the like, the same consisting in submitting the flax to dry air forced through a chamber in which the flax is placed, such air being dried by passing it through a chamber surrounding the exhaust-pipe of a gas-engine, substantially as specified. (2.) In the process for drying flax, referred to in claim 1, the provision of the air-drying chamber with a plate or web wound helically upon the exhaust-pipe within the chamber, substantially as specified.

No. 21754.—8th September, 1906.—FRANCIS WILSON SMITH, of Paekakariki, New Zealand, Farmer. Improved means for use in ascertaining the temperature of baled goods.*

Claims.—(1.) In means for use in ascertaining the temperature of baled goods, consisting of a hollow rod adapted to be inserted into the bale, and of a rod adapted to hold a thermometer and to be passed down into the hollow rod, forming the hollow rod with a slot extending longitudinally along it, and the inner rod with an opening adapted to receive the thermometer, the mouth of which opening is so shaped and arranged as to coincide with the slot in the outer rod or to be turned away therefrom by rotating the inner rod,
