Arrivals and Departures in 1906.

Registrar-General’s Office, Wellington, 17th January, 1907.

TABLES showing the numbers of arrivals in and departures from New Zealand during the year 1906, with totals for the previous nine years by way of comparison, are published for general information.

The arrivals in the colony last year (39,233) exceeded the number recorded in 1905 (32,685), and the departures during 1906, which numbered 26,385, were also greater than those in the previous year—viz., 23,383.

The excess of arrivals over departures last year was 12,848, against 9,302 in 1905.

The comparative tables show that the colony has drawn to itself in each of the ten years 1897 to 1906 more population than it has parted with.

The figures under the heading “United Kingdom” for 1906 show an excess of 5,798 arrivals over the departures, from Australian States there is an excess of 6,977, and from other countries a gain of 73.

Of the 39,233 persons who came to New Zealand last year, 4,208, or 10·73 per cent. of the total, were children—i.e., under twelve years of age; and of the 26,385 departures the children numbered 2,280, or 8·64 per cent.
