NOTE.—Two or more distinct industries were carried on at some establishments. In such cases particulars of power, hands, and plant employed, and wages paid, unless stated separately for each branch of industry, have been treated as belonging to the most important work.
The following information is supplied as to quantities of manufactures or productions in case of certain industries for which no special tables have been considered necessary:—
Coffee and spice works: 195 tons coffee, 19 tons chicory, 81 tons pepper, 103 tons spice, and 118 tons cocoa, &c.
Wire-works and mattress-factories: 24,515 mattresses, 2,482 gross sofa and mattress springs, &c.
Chemical-works: 18,209 tons manure, 836 tons sulphuric and muriatic acid, and 1,150 tons various acids.
Hat and cap factories: 23,368 dozen hats, 33,151 dozen caps.
Manure-works: 6,676 tons manure.
Paper-mills and paper-bag and box manufactories: 1,708 tons paper, 428 tons bags, 5,520,000 bags.
Basket and perambulator factories: 6,898 perambulators and go-carts, 8,947 baskets, 8,229 pounds’ worth sundries.
Brush and broom factories: 368,550 brooms, 405,276 brushes, 3,500 bellows.
Chaff-cutting establishments: 51,181 tons chaff cut, also grain threshed, cut, and hay baled.
Hæmatite-paint and varnish factories: 156 tons paint, 22,407 gallons varnish.
