CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1906, was estimated to be 2,673, of whom 64 were females.

REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population of the colony increased by 28,761, or at the rate of 3·26 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 15,913, and excess of arrivals over departures 12,848. The birth-rate for the colony in 1906 was 27·08 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 9·31, as against 27·22 and 9·27 respectively in 1905.

The deaths in 1906 (8,339) were greater than the number registered in 1905 (8,061) by 278, and the rate per 1,000 rose from 9·27 to 9·31.

The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1906 is estimated at 7,600, giving a rate of 8·49 per 1,000 of the mean population, against 7,200 and 8·28, the actual number and rate in 1905.
