POSTAL NOTES.

For list of offices see pages 56 to 98 of the Post and Telegraph Guide. Postal notes for fixed sums from 1s. up to 20s. are issued and paid at all Money-order Offices up to close of business at 5 p.m., and are issued but not paid at the offices described as Postal-note Offices only.

  1. Every postal note shall be numbered, and shall be for one of the following amounts, and in respect of each postal note the following poundage will be paid :—

Amount. Poundage. | Amount. Poundage.
s. d. d. | s. d. d.
1 0 0½ | 5 0 1
1 6 0½ | 10 0 2
2 0 0½ | 15 0 2
2 6 0½ | 20 0 2
3 0 1

Broken amounts may be made up by the use of postage stamps, not exceeding 5d. in value, affixed to the back of any one postal note. These stamps must be affixed only by the senders or remitters of such postal notes.

  1. Before a postal officer issues a postal note the amount of the note and the poundage thereon shall be paid to him, and he shall sign the note and stamp it with the proper stamp, specifying the day of the month on which the note is issued.

  2. The blanks in a postal note for the name of the person entitled to the money (in the regulations referred to as “the payee”), and for the name of the office at which it is to be paid, may be filled in at the time of issue or after.

  3. When a postal note is presented for payment with the name of the payee inserted, payment will only be made to the signature of the person so named; or, if a note is already signed by the person named as the payee, it must be indorsed on the back by the presenter.

  4. Every person to whom a postal note is issued should keep a record of the number, date, and name of the office of issue, to facilitate inquiry if the note should be lost.

  5. On application, accompanied by a fee of 6d., to the Accountant, General Post Office, the person to whom a postal note is issued or paid may, within two years of the date of issue, be informed of the particulars of payment of such postal note. The fee of 6d. covers any inquiry dealing with the remittance of a specific sum made up of one or more postal notes.

  6. If a postal note be crossed “and Co.,” payment will only be made through a banker; and if the name of a banker is added, payment will only be made through that banker.

  7. If any erasure or alteration is made, or if the note is cut, defaced, or mutilated, payment may be refused.

  8. After a postal note has once been paid, to whomsoever it is paid, the Postmaster-General will not be liable for any further claim.

  9. The regulations under which postal notes are issued allow the Postmaster to refuse or delay the payment of a note; but he must at once report his reasons for so doing to the Postmaster-General.

  10. These notes are not payable out of New Zealand.

ALEX. WILLIS,
Clerk of the Executive Council.
