Minister's Decisions under Tariff Act.

Department of Trade and Customs,
Wellington, 19th December, 1907.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Hon. the Minister of Customs has decided to interpret the Tariff Act in relation to the undermentioned articles as follows:—

NOTE.—“Not otherwise enumerated” appears as n.o.e.; “other kinds” as o.k.; “articles and materials suited only for, and to be used solely in, the fabrication of goods in the colony” as a. & m.s. Articles marked thus * are revised decisions.

Articles, and how classed. Rate of Duty.
07/2009. Ambulance-wagons; as carriages.. 20 per cent.
07/2266. Aniseed; as druggists’ sundries .. 20 per cent.
07/2265. Aquæ, concentrated, over 33 per cent. proof spirit; as spirits in combination with other ingredients 16s the liquid gallon.
07/2309. Automatic CO² recorder, “The Sarco”; as scientific apparatus Free.
07/2071. Bells, ships’; as manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2189. Blackboards; as educational apparatus Free.
07/2152. Blind-rollers, with metal fittings attached; as manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2022. Bone, corn, and shell mills; as machinery n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2255. Boot-fasteners, used in the manufacture of boots; as a. and m.s. Free.
07/2215. Butterick’s fashion-plates; as advertising matter n.o.e. 3d. the lb.
07/2339. Buttons, 9-carat gold; as jewellery 20 per cent.
07/2187. Canoes; as boats 20 per cent.
07/2022. Chaffcutters; as agricultural machines Free.
07/2172. Chain, endless, part of differential pulley, when imported attached to pulley; as manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2208. Chlorine - generators; as assay appliances Free.
07/2193. “Cooper and Nephew’s Manual on Sheep-dipping”; as advertising matter n.o.e. 3d. the lb.
07/2022. Corn-shellers; as agricultural machines Free.
07/2305. “Cross-tubes,” or “conical boiler-tubes,” over 6 in. and flanged; as manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2188. Curtains, in pairs, or tucked, frilled, or taped; as drapery n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2338. Dental napkins, unhemmed, for absorbing saliva; as dental appliances Free.
07/2291. Desks, for schools; as furniture n.o.e. 25 per cent.
07/2207. Dowels, wooden; as a. and m.s. .. Free.
07/2150. Earthern stoppers imported in “Save - all Tap Jars” to pay same rate as the jars; as earthenware 20 per cent.
07/2202. Engraving - machine, also zinc plates with engraved scrolls for same; as metal-workers’ machine tool Free.
07/2170. Ink, marking; as stationery n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2124. Insulators, of china or earthenware; as electric appliances n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2318. Lens-box, for focussing electric light for theatrical purposes; as electric appliances n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2294. Machine, trace - burnishing; as machinery n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/1612. Machinery, gold-saving, to include Standard. rectangular copper furnace, copper matting furnace, and jackets therefor; hot-blast stove Free.

Articles claimed free as gold-saving machinery, but decided as manufactured articles of metal, viz.:—

Cast-iron fire-hearth, settling-pot on wheels, charging-cars, slag-car; as manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. | 20 per cent. |

07/2302. “Poultry - pellets,” composed of farinaceous material; as food for animals 20 per cent.
07/2169. Propeller with shafting and boss attached; as manufactured articles of metal n.o.e. 20 per cent.
07/2285. Rennet - tests, “Marshall”; as scientific apparatus Free.
07/2267. Royal blue washing-paper (paper soaked in aniline dye); as aniline dyes Free.
07/2273. Saddlers’ hand-lever riveting-tool; as artificers’ tools Free.
07/2191. Vacuum Oil Company’s carriers’ grease, No. 1; as paraffin wax 1d. the lb.
07/2191. Vacuum Oil Company’s carriers’ greases, Nos. 4, 5, and 6; as a. and m.s. Free.
07/2200. “Vapo-Cresolene”; as druggists’ sundries 20 per cent.
07/2317. Wooden handles, straight and round, for pitchforks; as broom and similar handles 20 per cent.
07/2365. Pharmacopoeia preparations classified under section 22 of “The Tariff Act, 1907”—
