roller rotating in a forward direction, of a second shaft mounted in a parallel line beneath, and adapted to be moved towards or away from the main shaft. On this shaft is fixed a roller, which, by the movement of the shaft, will be caused to engage with its periphery against the periphery of one of the feeding-rollers, or to be free thereof. This shaft is caused to revolve in a direction such that, when its roller is brought into touch with the feeding-roller above, such roller will be caused to rotate in a reverse direction.

Claim.—In a process for the partial destructive distillation of coal at a low temperature which is arrested at the stage when illuminating-gas ceases to be evolved for the production of a smokeless fuel, the application of heat to the coal to be treated gradually and slowly up to a maximum ultimate temperature of about 800° Fahr., for the purpose and substantially as described.

Claims.—(1.) The waterproof solution consisting of 1 to 30 per cent. of lanoline (or other fat having the like suitable properties as lanoline) mixed with 70 to 99 per cent. of benzol, benzoline, turpentine, or other solvent having the like suitable properties as benzol, benzoline, or turpentine, for the steeping purpose set forth as described. (2.) The fixing-solution consisting of 5 to 10 per cent. of acetate of alumina, lime, or other fixing agent having the like suitable properties as acetate of alumina or lime, for fixing the waterproof solution covered by claim 1 in the manner set forth as described.
