No. 20591.—18th January, 1906.—WILLIAM ERNEST HUGHES, of Queen’s Chambers, Wellington, New Zealand, Registered Patent Agent (nominee of Industrial Patents Limited, of 40 Chancery Lane, London, England — the assignees of Stephen French, of 56 Milton Road, Swanscombe, Kent, England). Improvements in boot and shoe trees.
Claims.—(1.) In a boot or shoe tree as described, a laminated spring composed of layers or strips of unequal lengths so arranged that an initial bending of the spring may be effected before the combined strength or reaction of the layers or strips is exerted to resist the bending force, substantially as described. (2.) The improved boot or shoe tree consisting of the front or toe piece and the laminated spring pivotally connected thereto, substantially as described. (3.) The improved boot or shoe tree consisting of the front or toe piece, the heel-piece, and the two laminated springs separately pivoted at both ends to the toe and heel pieces, substantially as described.

Extract from Specification.—The invention comprises a vehicle adapted to be drawn by a horse, and the width between the wheels of which is adjustable to allow of its being adapted for different widths of furrows. Upon the vehicle is a reservoir for containing the spraying-mixture, a pump operated by the driving axle of the vehicle in connection with such reservoir, a high-pressure chamber in connection with the pump, an air-receptacle in which air is stored under compression and which air-receptacle is also in communication with the high-pressure chamber, and an air-pump also driven by the axle, for storing air within the air-receptacle.

No. 20719.—14th February, 1906.—ARTHUR JAMES BILLOWS, of 643 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, Manufacturing Chemist. Improvements in the mode of producing aerated drinks and apparatus therefor.*
Claims.—(1.) In machines for aerating liquids, a stationary mixing-chamber into which small quantities of gas and liquid are admitted every revolution of the bottle-rack, and a similar quantity passed on into the bottles in the rack and further mixed by the rotation of the latter. (2.) In machines for aerating liquids such as described in the preceding claim, a mixing-chamber in which rotates a hollow shaft or trunnion carrying agitating-vanes; a gas-admission valve, and cams carried on the shaft or trunnion for operating same; a valve for controlling the admission of the gassed liquid into the bottles, said valve being operated by a cross-head with rollers rising on cam tracks; a bottle-rack (with guards) operated by handles; a snifting valve, the latter opened by means of a cam or cams on chamber-cover; a double-acting pump driven from rear end of hollow shaft. (3.) In machines for aerating liquids such as is claimed in the preceding claims, the combination of the bottle-rack mounted on the hollow shaft or trunnion with the mixing-chamber, as described and illustrated. (4.) In machines for aerating liquids, a stationary mixing-chamber in which rotates a shaft carrying agitating-vanes; a gas-admission valve, and cams carried on the shaft for operating same; and means for withdrawing the gassed liquid from said mixing-chamber.

Claim.—In combination with a fencing-standard having an L-shaped slot for the reception of the fencing-wire, of plates pivoted to the standard, ears integral with the plates and passing into the slots, recesses at the back and front of the slot for the reception of the ears, and a recess in the plate for the reception of the fencing-wire, substantially as set forth.

No. 20822.—8th March, 1906.—JOHN McGUIRE, of 82 William Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Mechanic. Improvements in cooking-ovens.
Claim.—In cooking-ovens, in combination, an oven-door having an aperture cut therein, a sheet of glass covering such aperture and enabling articles in the interior of the oven to be seen through same, a fillet of non-combustible compressible material surrounding the edges of such glass, a graduated thermometer placed behind such glass and exposed to the heat of the oven, said thermometer having its graduated face hermetically secured to the sheet of glass, a rim-plate to keep the glass and thermometer in position, and means for securing the whole of the parts together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth, and as illustrated on the drawings.

Extract from Specification.—In accordance with the present invention these several operations, in connection with the machine illustrated and described in the above-recited Letters Patent, but which are generally common to all linotype machines, may be effected through one lever or handle. Further objects of the invention consist in providing new mould-wiping means for such machines, and in improving the construction of the justifying means, all of which will be described in detail in the description below and in connection with the drawings.

Claims.—(1.) In billiard-tables or the like, a pocket constructed with a saucer-shaped bottom part supported by hinge-pins from a ring arranged above it in the pocket, substantially as described and shown. (2.) In billiard-tables or the like, a pocket having its upper part formed of netting a¹ secured at its top edge to the pocket-bar and cushion-rail as ordinarily, and with its lower part formed of a circular ring as B secured to the cushion-rail and carrying by a hinge-connection a saucer-shaped bottom part C, said parts B and C being padded internally, substantially as described and shown. (3.) In billiard-tables or the like, a cushion-rail constructed with a longitudinal strip of metal as A² secured to the inclined face of the wood rail as A³ behind the rubber portion, substantially as described and shown.
