No candidate will be permitted to take more than four of the subjects included in Groups II, III, IV (optional subjects) in the examination.

(11.) Latin.
(12.) French.
(13.) German.
(14.) Italian.
(15.) Spanish.
(16.) Maori.
(17.) Elementary Mathematics.

Group III—
(18.) Elementary Mechanics.
(19.) Heat and Light.
(20.) Magnetism and Electricity.
(21.) Elementary Chemistry.
(22.) Elementary Geology.
(23.) Elementary Zoology.
(24.) Elementary Botany.
(25.) Elementary Physical Measurements.
(26.) Elementary Practical Agriculture.

Group IV—
(27.) English History and Civics.
(28.) Book-keeping and Commercial Correspondence.
(29.) Shorthand.
(30.) Needlework (for women).
(31.) Plain Cookery.
(32.) Dairy-work.
(33.) Modelling in Plasticine or Clay, Paper-work, and Brick-laying.
(34.) Cardboard-work.
(35.) Woodwork.
(36.) Ironwork.

NOTE.—“Elementary Science of Common Life (Chemistry),” Board of Education, South Kensington, London, may be substituted for one of the subjects of Group III.*

SCOPE OF THE EXAMINATION FOR CLASS D.

  1. The scope of the examination for Class D is here set forth:—

Group I.

(1.) Reading.—The candidate may be required to read, without time for preparation, a passage from some well-known prose work, or from the leading article of a newspaper, and also a passage of verse. Due regard shall be had to enunciation, correct pronunciation, tone, inflexion, fluency, expression, character, and intelligence.

(2.) Writing.—An exercise in text hand and in small hand, in such style as the candidate would adopt in setting copies for children. In the text-hand exercise the height of the smaller letters is to be the same as the space between two lines on an ordinary sheet of ruled foolscap, say one-third of an inch.
