CHATHAM SOUND.—PRINCE RUPERT HARBOUR (TUCK INLET).—KESTREL ROCK.—CORRECTED POSITION.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.
—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 34 (1477) of 1906, the Canadian Government has given further notice that Mr. G. B. Dodge, Hydrographic Surveyor, reports that Kestrel Rock lies half a mile S. 8° W. true (S. by E. ½ E. e’ly mag.) from the islet off Lima Point, Chatham Sound, on the following bearings:—
Kinnahan Islands, north tangent, S. 59° W. true (S.S.W. ½ W. mag.).
Holland Island, S. 9° E. true (S.E. ¾ S. s’ly mag.).
Coast Island, north tangent, S. 65° E. true (E. ½ N. n’ly mag.).
The rock has been marked by a small spar buoy painted red and black in horizontal bands.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Board of Trade, London, are published for general information.

AFRICA.
CAPE RECIFE LT.-H.—A sector of F. white lt., vis. from S. 39° W. to S. 11° W., is now shown immediately below the rev. white lt. exh. from the lt.-h. (34° 1¾′ S., 25° 42′ E.), in place of the sector of rev. red lt. prev. shown over the Roman Rks. in Algoa Bay. Sept.
TULLÉAR BAY.—The shoal off Anosi Pt. at the mouth of the River Fiherenana is extending seaward, the shoal water now having reached the pecked line denoting the fairway, this line requires moving slightly to the wrd. The beacon wrd. of Anosi and the flagstaff 6 cables erd. have disappeared, but a wooden tripod beacon, position not given, has been est. in this vicinity. A pole beacon, surm. by a white diamond, is est. on the coast N. 53° W. from Table Mountain; this beacon in line with Table Mountain S. 53° E. leads up to the entr. of Tulléar Chan. (23° 21′ S., 43° 37′ E.) until Great Reef beacon bears S., whence the course should be altered as requisite. Aug.
EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO.
LIMA ISLDS.—The s.s. “Fallo don” is reported to have struck on a reef, carrying 3 fms., in approx. 1° 21¼′ N., 104° 19¼′ E., about 6 cables S.-erd. of Stork Reef. P.D. has been placed against this shoal on the chart, and these islands should be given a wide berth. Aug.
SUNKEN WRECKS AND FLOATING DERELICTS.—SUNKEN WRECKS.—SINGAPORE STRAIT.—On 4th August a wrk., 2 masts proj., in approx. 1° 12¼′ N., 103° 36¼′ E., in the wrn. approach to Singapore Main Strait, with Raffles lt. S. 73° E., 8¾ miles, and Pulo Merambon N. 2° E. Sept.
CHINA SEA.
PORT SWATAU APPROACH.—A shoal, carrying 11 ft. at L.W., exists in approx. 23° 16¼′ N., 116° 47¾′ E., in the approach to the port, with Squat Rk. N. 40° W., 3½ cables, and Green Is. summit S. 16° E. Another shoal, carrying 16 ft. at L.W., lies ¾ cable N. 30° E. from the above. Sept.
An unsucc. search has been made for the 2 rks. in Sugarloaf Chan., charted as carrying 2¼ and 1¾ fms., 4½ cables N. 78° W. and 7 cables N. 67° W. respectively from Sugarloaf Lt.-h. (23° 19¾′ N., 116° 45½′ E.). They have been erased from the chart. Sept.
Nos. 1 and 2 fairway-buoys, marking the outer bar, have been moved to the nrd., and now lie respectively with Sharp Peak △ (26° 8′ N., 119° 40′ E.) N. 74° W., 7¹⁄₁₀ miles, and N. 68° W., 5¹⁄₁₀ miles. Sept.
YANG TSE KIANG ESTUARY.—N. CHAN.—A red iron lt.-v., marked “Drinkwater Point,” with an iron column surm. by the lantern exh. an occ. white lt., vis. 5 secs., ecl. 5 secs., elev. 35 ft., R. 11 miles, and carrying a fog-bell struck once every 15 secs., is est. in approx. 34° 24½′ N., 121° 56½′ E., about 3 miles N. 83° W. from Drinkwater Pt. lt. and bell buoy. Should this lt.-v. be out of position, the lt. will not be exh., but a F. red lt. will be shown from each end of the vessel at night, and a red flag displayed by day. The group-fl. white lt. on Drinkwater Pt. and Drinkwater Pt. lt. and bell buoy have been disc. Sept.
PEIHO RIVER ENTR.—The fairway-buoy has been moved 6¾ cables S. 68° W. A lt.-v., “Bar Lt.-boat,” red, with 1 mast surm. by a black ball, exh. a F. red lt., elev. 25 ft., R. 4 miles, is moored on the nrn. side of the chan., 3 miles S. 50° E. from N. Fort (38° 59¾′ N., 117° 42¾′ E.). A lt.-v., “Spit Lt.-boat,” red, with 1 mast surm. by a black ball, exh. 2 F. red lts. vert., 6 ft. apart, the upper lt. elev. 25 ft., R. 1 mile, is moored on the nrn. side of the chan., 1⁶⁄₁₀ miles S. 26° E. from N. Fort. Taku Bar Marks.—Two leading-lts. are exh. from white poles surm. by black triangles: The outer lt. F. white, elev. 20 ft., and the inner lt. F. red, elev. 44 ft. These lts. in line lead through the Deep Hole. An occ. white lt., elev. 30 ft. above H.W., is exh. from a white pole on the site of the old N. Fort (39° 0′ N., 117° 42½′ E.). Sept.
NEW ZEALAND.
ADMIRALTY CHARTS that have received large corrections: No. 3565, new chart, New Zealand, North Isl., E., Bream Head to Tepaki Pt. (Mercury Bay), including Hauraki Gulf. July.
NORTH AMERICA, WEST COAST.
Vancouver Island.
QUATSINO SOUND.—KOPRINO HARB. APPROACH.—A rk., which dries 2 ft. at L.W. springs, is reported to exist in approx. 50° 28¾′ N., 127° 54′ W., S.-wrd. of Monday Shoal in the approach to the harb., with Rain Pt. N. 73° E., 11 cables, and wrn. end of Canoe Islet S.E. Sept.
GANGES HARB.—The black can buoy marking Horda Rk., in approx. 48° 49½′ N., 123° 25′ W., 6½ cables S. 35° E. from Nose Pt., has been replaced by a buoy surm. by a cage, all being black. Aug.
NORTH AMERICA, WEST COAST.
SAN LUIS OBISPO BAY.—A black whistle buoy, marked No. 3, is moored in 6 fms., in approx. 35° 9′ N., 120° 41¾′ W., about 1 cable S.-erd. from the rk. at the outer end of the breakwater constr. at San Luis Pt., Port Harford, or 7 cables S. 72° E. from the lt.-h. on that pt. Sept.
STA. BARBARA CHAN.—The following white can buoys are est. for the use of vessels undergoing steam trials in the chan.: 1. Buoy, C. 1, moored in 56 fms., with Sta. Barbara Lt.-h. (34° 23½′ N., long. 119° 43¼′ W.) N. 53° E., 6½ miles, and Goleta Pt. N. 17° W. 2. Buoy, C. 2, in 64 fms., with the lt.-h. N. 56° E., 7¼ miles, and Goleta Pt. N. 2° E. 3. Buoy, C. 3, in 81 fms., with the lt.-h. N. 60° E., 8½ miles, and Goleta Pt. N. 20° E. 4. Buoy, C. 4, in 137 fms., with the lt.-h. N. 61° E., 9½ miles, and Goleta Pt. N. 32° E. Sept.
ANCUD GULF ENTR.—CHACAO NARROWS.—The depths on the shoals in Chacao Narrows are as follows, and not those shown on the chart: 1. Rodal Amazonas, in approx. 41° 46½′ S., 73° 44′ W., carries 3¾ fms. 2. Topaze Rk., carries 4¾ fms. 3. Müller Rk., carries 2¾ fms. 4. Guillermo Rk., carries 4¼ fms. 5. Puguenum Rks., both uncover at L.W. 6. Remolinos Rks., in approx. 41° 47¾′ S., 73° 31′ W., the nrn.-most consists of 2 heads, 20 yds. apart E. and W., which uncover at L.W.; the srn.-most rk. carries 2 fms. Sept.
On 11th June, 1906, Laitec Lt.-h. (43° 17¾′ S., 73° 34½′ W.), from which a F. white lt. was exh., had been destroyed by fire. Sept.
Varied Notice fixing Closing-hours of Bootmakers’ Shops in the City of Nelson.
WHEREAS by notice dated the 6th day of March, 1906, and gazetted on the 8th day of March, 1906, the Minister of Labour, in exercise of the powers in that behalf conferred upon him by section 21 of “The Shops and Offices Act, 1904,” and section 5 of “The Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act, 1905,” and acting in accordance with a requisition duly made and certified as required by those sections, did direct that from and after the 19th day of March, 1906, all boot-makers’, -importers’, and -salesmen’s shops in the City of Nelson should be closed at 6 o’clock p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, at 1 o’clock p.m. on Wednesdays (the weekly half-holiday), and at 9 o’clock p.m. on Saturdays, except on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: And whereas by a like requisition, duly made and certified as aforesaid, he has been requested to vary the said notice by fixing 9.15 o’clock p.m. as the hour for closing on Saturdays during the months of May to August inclusive, and 9.35 o’clock p.m. during the months of September to April inclusive, instead of 9 o’clock (Christmas and New Year’s Eves to be excepted as before):
Now, therefore, in compliance with the last-mentioned requisition, and in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by the above-mentioned sections, I do hereby vary the said notice by directing that on and after the 1st day of November, 1906, the hour for closing on Saturdays shall be 9.15 p.m. and 9.35 p.m. as requested.
