amendments, and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, the Woolston Borough Council hereby resolves as follows: That, for the purpose of providing the interest and other charges and sinking fund on a loan of £20,000, authorised to be raised by the Woolston Borough Council, under the provisions of "The Local Bodies' Loans Act, 1901," for concrete channelling and kerbing, grading footpaths and streets, widening streets, formation and new footpaths, asphaltng footpaths, engineering, first year's interest and contingencies, and the cost of raising the loan, the said Woolston Borough Council hereby makes and levies a special rate of 2d. in the pound upon the unimproved value of all rateable property within the Borough of Woolston; and that such special rate shall be an annual-recurring rate during the currency of such loan, and be payable half-yearly on the lst day of February and the 1st day of August in each and every year during the currency of such loan, being a period of thirty-five years, or until the loan is fully paid off.

The above resolution was passed at a special meeting of the Woolston Borough Council on Friday, the 12th day of January, 1906, and confirmed at a special meeting of the said Council on Wednesday, the 14th day of February, 1906.

New Zealand International Exhibition, 1906. — Minerals Court.

Mines Department, Wellington, 30th July, 1906.

A GOLD medal and fifty guineas, a silver medal and twenty-five guineas, and a bronze medal and ten guineas will be awarded by the Mines Department for essays on the present condition and future prospects of the mineral resources of New Zealand, and the best means of fostering their development.

In judging the merits of the essays preference will be given to those which are of a practical character.

The essays must be sent in to the Under-Secretary for Mines, Wellington, signed with a motto, and accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the author's name and address, on or before 1st December, 1906.

The essays will be submitted to a Board of three persons (to be hereafter appointed), on whose decision the above prizes will be awarded.

Note.—"Mineral" means any metal or mineral, and includes petroleum and other mineral oils.

Requisition as to taking Land compulsorily under "The Land for Settlements Consolidation Act, 1900," and its Amendments.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is intended, on behalf of His Majesty, to take compulsorily, under the provisions of "The Land for Settlements Consolidation Act, 1900," and its amendments, the land the acreage, description, and classification of which, as also the names and addresses of the owners of such land, are specified in the Schedule hereto; and every owner of the land, and also every other person having any estate or interest therein, is hereby required to serve their respective claims for compensation on the Minister of Lands, in the form and manner and within the period provided by the said Acts.

SCHEDULE.

TE OHU ESTATE.

ACREAGE and Description.—All that parcel of land, containing 4,650 acres or thereabouts, inclusive of roads, being part of the Te Ohu or Manawatu No. 3A Block, situated in Blocks II, V, VI, and X of the Norsewood Survey District, and bounded as follows: Commencing at a point where the right bank of the Mangatewainui River crosses the west side of the main road from Dannevirkle Napier, and bounded towards the south-east generally by that road: towards the south-west generally by the road forming the north-east boundary of Lot B on a plan deposited in the office of the District Land Registrar at Napier, under No. 1254; by the Matamau Stream; by Sections 45 and 46, Block X, Norsewood Survey District; by Section 1, Block V, Norsewood Survey District; by the Mangatewaiiti Stream: towards the north-west by that portion of the Te Ohu or Manawatu No. 3A Block which is situated west of Section 34, Block V, Norsewood Survey District: again towards the south-west by the continuation of the road which forms the north-eastern boundary of the said Section 34 to the point in line with the northwestern boundary of Section 3, Block II, Norsewood Survey District: towards the north-west by other portion of Te Ohu: towards the north and north-east generally by Sections 3 and 2, Block II, Norsewood Survey District; and by the Mangatewainui River to the commencing-point: excepting always the Allotments Nos. 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, shown on a plan deposited in the office of the District Land Registrar at Napier, under No. 1210, and excepting also the portions of roads forming the immediate frontage of the said allotments, which said excepted allotments and roads are not included in the above-described area.

The Minister's classification of the land.—Second class. The land intended to be taken is the whole of the owner's interest in the area above mentioned.

The registered owner is Mrs. Jane Holder Mathews, executrix of James Mathews, deceased, and the property is subject to certain rights of way created by or arising out of the deposit of Plans 1210 and 1254.

The registered owners of any lesser estate or interest are as set out hereunder:—

The Bank of Australia, holders of Mortgage 28035. The Bank of Australia, holders of Mortgage 12573 (Land Transfer). George Albert Gammon and William Alfred Gammon, holders of Sublease No. 2217, expires 2nd March, 1909. T. H. G. Lloyd and M. Tansey, transferees of Lease 2217 from G. A. and W. A. Gammon. Mary Guy, holder of Lease 2470, from James Mathews, expiring 1st September, 1910. Thomas Henry Gordon Lloyd, George Albert Gammon, William Alfred Gammon, and Harry McLellan Simmonds, transferees of Lease 2470, from Mary Guy. T. H. G. Lloyd and M. Tansey, transferees of Lease No. 2470 from T. H. G. Lloyd, G. A. Gammon, W. A. Gammon, and H. M. Simmonds. Dated at Wellington, this 5th day of October, 1906.

Gorse declared to be a Noxious Weed in the Johnsonville Town District.—Notice No. 1067.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Johnsonville District Town Board has, by special order, declared gorse to be a noxious weed within the meaning of "The Noxious Weeds Act, 1900," in the Johnsonville Town District.

Examination for Mine-managers' and Battery Superintendents' Certificates.

Mines Department, Wellington, 5th October, 1906.

EXAMINATIONS of candidates for certificates as Firstand Second-class Mine-managers and Battery Superintendents under "The Mining Act, 1905," and Firstand Second-class Mine-managers under "The Coal-mines Act, 1905," will be held on Tuesday, the 22nd January, 1907, and following days, at places to be hereafter named. All applications, with necessary certificates, and fee of £1 by post-office order, should be addressed to "The Secretary to the Board of Examiners under the Mining Act [or Coalmines Act], Wellington," and must be received before the 22nd December. Forms of application may be obtained at Schools of Mines, Thames, Waihi, and Coromandel, also from Inspectors of Mines, Thames, Westport, and Dunedin.

Examination for Dredgemasters' Certificates.

An examination of candidates for certificates as dredgemasters, under "The Mining Act, 1905," will be held on Tuesday, the 29th January, 1907, at Greymouth and Dunedin. All applications, with necessary certificates, and fee of £1 by post-office order, should be addressed to "The Secretary to the Board of Examiners under the Mining Act, Wellington," and must be received before the 3rd January, 1907. Forms of application may be obtained from Inspectors of Mines, Westport and Dunedin.
