Constitutional Diseases.—There were 48 deaths in this class, cancer being fatal in 18 cases, phthisis in 16 (Auckland 2, Wellington 7, Christchurch 2, Dunedin 5), and other forms of tuberculosis in 6 (3 at Auckland, 2 at Christchurch, and 1 at Dunedin). Diabetes caused 1 death at Christchurch, and anæmia 2 at Auckland.
Developmental Diseases.—There were 35 deaths, of which 19 were of senile decay.
Local Diseases.—In this class there were 127 deaths. Of these, 24 were of the nervous system, 36 of the circulatory, 30 of the respiratory, 17 of the digestive, 1 of the lymphatic, 14 of the urinary, 2 of the reproductive, 1 of the integumentary, and 2 of the organs of locomotion. Bronchitis caused 13 deaths (5 each at Auckland and Wellington, and 3 at Dunedin); pneumonia, 11 (3 at Auckland, 1 at Wellington, 4 at Christchurch, and 3 at Dunedin); and other pulmonary diseases, 6 (1 at Auckland, 2 at Wellington, 2 at Christchurch, and 1 at Dunedin). Appendicitis was fatal in 1 case (at Christchurch), and Bright’s disease in 11 (2 at Auckland, 1 at Wellington, 5 at Christchurch, and 3 at Dunedin).
Violence.—Of the 12 deaths in this class, 2 were by suicide, 1 by shooting, and 1 by hanging. Accidental deaths resulted from the following causes: Fracture of skull, 1; fall from window, 1; fall at dock, 1; kick from horse, 2; scalds, 2; and suffocation, 3.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of the four centres from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
