Grey County.—Hohonu Survey District.

Altitude, 200 ft. to 600 ft. above sea-level. Heavy forest land, timber of poor quality; 250 acres undulating to broken, remainder steep mountain-slopes; chiefly light inferior soil, covered in places with old creek débris; well watered. Access by main dray-road, six miles to Kumara Township, ten miles and a half to railway.

SECOND-CLASS LIGHT-BUSH LAND.
Westland County.—Gillespie’s Survey District.

Altitude, 130 ft. to 350 ft. above sea-level. About 40 acres is steep sideling, covered with mixed bush; the remainder is a flat, about 30 acres of which is swampy; soil on flat sandy and fairly good. Area well watered by large creeks. The section is two miles down the Cook River from the junction of the Gillespie’s-Cook and Main South Roads, the Cook River being eight miles along the bridle-track from Gillespie’s Beach Township.

Altitude, from 150 ft. to 400 ft. Contains about 80 acres of sideling and 30 acres of swamp, remainder being a flat, covered with fair soil. The hillside is covered with mixed bush. Well watered by small creeks. The section is a mile down the Clearwater River from where the bridle-track from Gillespie’s Beach Township crosses it.

Altitude, about 200 ft. above sea-level. Flat land, with sandy soil. One-fourth of section inclined to be swampy, and is covered with mixed bush. Well watered by a large creek. The section is a mile down the Cook River from the junction of Gillespie’s-Cook Road and the Main South Road, the junction being eight miles by the bridle-track from Gillespie’s Beach Township.

Altitude, 200 ft. above sea-level. Area is flat, and covered with mixed bush. About one-third of section is covered with scrub and white-pine, and inclined to be a little swampy. Well watered by small creeks. Soil is sandy and about 2 ft. 6 in. deep. Access similar to above Section No. 2438, which it adjoins.

Altitude, 120 ft. to 350 ft. Section comprises 60 acres steep sideling, about 40 acres swamp, and remainder is flat land, covered with a foot or two of sandy soil on a clay formation. The slopes are covered with mixed bush and scrub. Area is well watered by creeks. It is situated two miles and a half down the Clearwater River from where the bridle-track of Gillespie’s-Cook Road crosses that river, seven miles and a half from Gillespie’s Beach Township.

SECOND-CLASS SCRUB LAND.
Westland County.—Gillespie’s Survey District.

Altitude, 340 ft. above sea-level. About 220 acres covered with mixed light bush, the rest with tussock and black scrub. Ground level and fit for grazing purposes, the 220 acres being covered with black soil, the remainder being stony. Access by a bridle-track, nine miles and a half from Gillespie’s Township.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twenty-fourth day of February, one thousand nine hundred and six.

Rural Lands in Southland Land District open for Selection on Lease in Perpetuity.
PLUNKET, Governor
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and thirty-six of “The Land Act, 1892,” and section two of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby declare and provide as follows, that is to say:—

The rural lands described in the Schedule hereto are hereby set apart for disposal by way of selection on and after the twenty-fifth day of April, one thousand nine hundred and six, at the rentals specified in the said Schedule.

The said lands may be selected on lease in perpetuity only, as provided by section one hundred and twenty-one of “The Land Act, 1892,” as they contain, or are supposed to contain, metal, mineral, or valuable stone, and shall not be purchased for cash.

For the purposes of “The Bush and Swamp Crown Lands Settlement Act, 1903,” the lands enumerated in the said Schedule hereto shall be deemed to be “heavy-bush land.”

No general rate shall be levied or collected by any local authority from the said lands for the period of four years from the date from which in each case respectively such lands are disposed of, and no local authority shall have power to levy or collect any such rate from such lands during such period.

After the first half-year’s rent has been paid by the selector the further instalments of rent payable by him for a period of four years shall not be demanded: provided that if at any time during the first five years of his occupancy the selector disposes of his interest in the land the rent so conceded shall be paid by him in full, and thereupon the Land Board may remit such instalments of rent payable by the incoming tenant, not exceeding in the aggregate the amount of rent previously conceded to the selector, as the Board shall think fit.

SOUTHLAND LAND DISTRICT.—WALLACE COUNTY.—WAIAU SURVEY DISTRICT.

Altitude ranges from 350 ft. to 800 ft. above sea-level. Hilly, with flat tops on spurs. Covered with heavy mixed bush, principally birch, with some rimu, matai, miro, and totara of no commercial value; sandstone formation; well watered. Soil good on Sections 7 and 12, and generally inferior on Section 10, with patches of good land on ridges. Section 12 is distant about four miles from Tuatapere Store and Post-office, and other sections from four to five miles from formed and metalled road, and about seven miles from Orawia Store, Post-office, and School.

Altitude ranges from 200 ft. to 750 ft. above sea-level. Covered with heavy mixed bush, principally birch, with some rimu, kahikatea, matai, miro, kamahi, and totara of no commercial value. Soil generally inferior, on sandstone formation, with patches of good land along North Road and some of the ridges; well watered. Distant from one mile and a half to three miles and a half from Tuatapere Store and Post-office. Orawia Valley Road is in course of construction.
