Constitutional Diseases.--Cancer caused 16 deaths at the four chief cities and suburbs; phthisis, 14; and other tuberculosis diseases, 5. There were also 6 deaths from diabetes, and 2 others: making a total mortality of 43 deaths, or nearly 20 per cent. of the whole from all causes.
Local Diseases.--The deaths for the month at the four boroughs and suburbs numbered 126, or 57 per cent. of the whole mortality. Of these, deaths from diseases of the nervous system were 30; of the circulatory, 23; of the respiratory, 32; of the digestive, 25; of the urinary, 11; of the reproductive, 3; of the organs of locomotion, 1; and of the integuments, 1.
Violence.--The mortality comprises 9 accidental and 1 homicidal death. Of the accidental, 1 was caused by crushing (a dray), 1 by running over (a cart), and another by a tram-car. One death was from injuries received at football, 1 by falling in front of a tram-car, and 1 from injuries to head. Another resulted from fall from verandah, another from a train. There remains 1 from accident at birth, and 1 merely returned as homicidal from the effect of a bullet-wound.
The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of the four centres from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
