✨ Mortality and Birth Statistics

May 11.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 1123

Violent Deaths. β€” Of 16 deaths at the four boroughs, 12 were accidental and 4 suicidal. Of accidental deaths, 1 resulted from collision with electric tram, 1 from running over by traction-engine, 1 from from collision with horse, and another from fall out of buggy. There were also 1 death from fall of material at a brick-kiln and 1 from fracture of skull not further described. Three persons were accidentally drowned, and 1 killed by gunshot wounds. An infant was suffocated by overlying, and another died from accident at birth. Two suicides were by poison, 1 by hanging, and 1 by jumping from a house (top story).

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of the four centres from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
