REGISTRAR-GENERAL'S Report on the Vital Statistics of the Principal Towns of New Zealand during the Month of December, 1904:—

  • The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics. The total population of Auckland and its suburbs was 67,226 persons, and that of Christchurch with its complete suburbs amounted to 57,041 persons, at the Census of March, 1901.

† By an extension of the boundaries of Dunedin City, Caversham was included from 1st November. It is, however, separately given in the Vital Statistics till the end of the year on account of the report for 1904, which will embrace a twelve-months period.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 514, against 497 in November—an increase of 17. The deaths in December were 178, a decrease of 5 on the number in November. Of the total deaths, males contributed 95, females 83. Forty of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 22·47 per cent. of the whole number; 30 of these were under one year of age.

There were forty-four deaths of persons of 65 years of age and upwards: Eight men, 67, 68, 73 (two), 74, 78, 80, 85, and three women, 65, 68, 96, died at Auckland; three men, 68, 73, 76, and nine women, 65, 67 (two), 71, 73 (two), 74, 76, 77, at Wellington; five men, 67, 72, 73 (two), 75, and two women, 65, 72, at Christchurch; eight men, 65, 66, 71, 76, 81, 86, 87, 91, and six women, 67 (two), 73, 75 (two), 86, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportion per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given, registered during the Month of December, 1904.
