NOTE.—Temperature of air in shade, 4·1° Fahr. below the usual mean for the month. Maximum, 75·6°; minimum, 41·9°. Mean daily range of temperature, 12·1° Fahr. Several calm periods and light S. winds prevailed. Morning skies mostly cloudy, and at times inclined to drizzle, but the afternoons were generally fine and bright. Hailstorm at 3.40 p.m. on 1st. Terrific seas at the Heads on the 2nd, but only moderate gale followed in the night. Mean elastic force of vapour, 0·364 in. Mean temperature of the dew-point, 50·2° Fahr. Relative humidity, 74 per cent. Earthquake at 4.9 a.m. on 10th: dull shake, accompanied by noise as of a heavy thud in the earth.
