LOCALITY AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE LAND.

The block of land is situated for the most part on the Tongaporutu-Mangaroa Road—which will eventually become one of the main through roads of Taranaki—in the Clifton County, in the north-eastern part of Taranaki. It consists generally of ridgy and hilly country, with fair to steep slopes. In some parts of the block, near the higher lands, the watercourses are sharp and steep. There are terraces on the hillsides and small flats along the streams. On the higher lands of the Waitaanga the country is more rolling, the spurs easier, and there are more flats. The forest is heavy, being composed chiefly of rata, rimu, kahikatea, tawa, miro, tawhero, hinau, rewarewa, kotukutuku, and mahoe, with thick undergrowth of the usual kind. The soil varies from fair to good quality, resting on a papa formation, well watered by permanent streams. The altitude varies from 550 ft. to 1,850 ft. above sea-level. On the whole, the land is well adapted for pastoral purposes. On the better sections dairying will, no doubt, be undertaken later on. The principal means of access will be on the east from the new Town of Mangaroa, two miles and a half to twenty miles and a half distant, which again is twenty-nine miles by a dray-road from the Ongarue Railway-station, on the North Island Main Trunk Railway. On the west or Taranaki side from Tongaporutu the distance is nineteen miles to thirty-nine miles and a half. From Tongaporutu there is a dray-road for six miles, and a horse-road for about seven miles. At the Mangaroa end the surveyed road is a bridle-track for two miles and a half. It is anticipated that the intervening country will shortly be traversed by a horse-track not altogether on the surveyed line of road, though for long distances it is. There are also good walking tracks all through the block. All horse and walking-tracks are reserved until the permanent roads are made. At both Mangaroa and Tongaporutu there are complete stores and accommodation-houses.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this ninth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and four.

T. Y. DUNCAN,
Minister of Lands.
