The total population of Auckland and its suburbs was 67,226 persons, and that of Christchurch with its complete suburbs amounted to 57,041 persons, at the Census of March, 1901.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 506, against 504 in June—an increase of 2. The deaths in July were 230, an increase of 8 on the number in June. Of the total deaths, males contributed 127, females 103. Forty-seven of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 20·43 per cent. of the whole number; 39 of these were under one year of age.

There were fifty-seven deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Twelve men, 66, 68, 69, 70, 72, 75, 76, 78, 81, 84, 85, 89, and four women, 65, 74, 76, 82, died at Auckland; five men, 65 (two), 68, 72, 82, and five women, 68, 72, 75, 86, 87, at Wellington; six men, 65, 68, 71, 72, 74, 81, and eight women, 65, 67, 69, 72, 73 (two), 74, 77, at Christchurch; and nine men, 67, 68, 70 (two), 73, 76, 77, 78, 90, and eight women, 66, 68 (two), 71, 74, 75, 85, 92, at Dunedin.
