Okau Road, between fifteen and twenty miles from Tongaporutu Township, where there are a post and telephone office, stores, &c. This township is forty-eight miles from New Plymouth and thirty-seven miles from Waitara, the nearest seaport. The main road from New Plymouth is metalled to Uruti, with the exception of occasional gaps in places between there and Urenui. The Okau Road branches off the main road about four miles south of Tongaporutu, and is formed for dray traffic for about seven miles, and another seven miles and a half are opened as a horse-road. The climate is bracing and healthy, the rainfall being equable and plentiful throughout the entire year, which generally insures an abundance of grass when the pastures are dry and burnt in other parts of the colony, whilst the comparatively low elevation has a tendency to maintain a mild temperature.
