No. 17511.—4th February, 1904.—HUGH MARSHALL, Doctor of Science, and JOSEPH MATON, Company-manager, both of Edinburgh, Scotland. An improved lamp and apparatus for burning carburetted air.

Claims.—(1.) An apparatus for burning carburetted air, consisting of a reservoir situated below a burner and having no free liquid, but containing an absorbent block saturated with hydrocarbon, such apparatus being provided with passages for air into the reservoir downwards through the absorbent and upwards to the burner, together with means for regulating the supply of ordinary and carburetted air, for the purpose and in manner substantially as shown and described. (2.) An apparatus for burning carburetted air, consisting of a reservoir situated below a burner and having no free liquid, but containing an absorbent block saturated with hydrocarbon, such apparatus being provided with passages for air into the reservoir downwards through the absorbent and upwards to the burner, together with means for simultaneously and by one operation regulating the supply of ordinary and carburetted air, for the purpose and in manner substantially as shown and described. (3.) In apparatus for burning carburetted air, the combination of parts substantially as described in reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings. (4.) In apparatus for burning carburetted air, the combination of parts substantially as described in reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing.

No. 17518—6th February, 1904.—FREDERICK HERBERT HOWARD, of Tokaora, Hawera, New Zealand, Gardener. An improved outrigger for vehicles and the like.

Claims.—(1.) In apparatus for the purpose described, in combination, a bar attached to the front of a vehicle, a roller pivoted to the said bar, chains attached by hooks to the axle of the machine, a chain connected to the said chains and passing around the pulley, and a swingletree attached to the end of the said chain, substantially as set forth. (2.) In apparatus for the purpose described, in combination, a bar attached at one end to the shaft-bar of a vehicle or the like and at the other end supported upon a hook attached to the body of the vehicle, a roller pivoted within a loop formed upon the end of the said bar, chains attached by hooks to the axle of the vehicle, a chain connected to the said chains and passing through a keep and around a pulley, and a swingletree attached to the end of the said chain, substantially as set forth. (3.) The combination and arrangement of parts comprising the improved outrigger for vehicles and the like, substantially as and for the purposes set forth, and illustrated on the drawings.

No. 17523.—8th February, 1904.—JOHN BOOTH, Sharebroker, and ALFRED ERNEST BUDD, Accountant, both of Panama Street, Wellington, New Zealand. Improvements in and relating to machinery belting.

Claims—(1.) A belt for machinery, consisting of links made of blocks of compressed fibre, the links being connected together by rivets extending across the belt, substantially as set forth. (2.) A belt for machinery, consisting of links made of blocks of compressed fibre, a central flexible core extending the whole length of the belt, the links being connected together by rivets extending across the belt, substantially as set forth. (3.) A belt for machinery, consisting of links made of blocks of compressed fibre, the links being connected together by rivets extending across the belt, and blocks of leather forming the edges of the belt, substantially as set forth. (4.) The combination and arrangement of parts comprising the improved belt for machinery, substantially as set forth and illustrated.

No. 17529.—10th February, 1904.—IVAN MARTINIUS SMITH, of 11A, Peterborough Street, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, Commission Agent. An improved combination culinary utensil.

Claims.—(1.) A combination culinary utensil comprising the parts arranged, combined, and operating substantially as specified. (2.) For the purpose indicated, in combination, a vessel having an opening in the bottom, a screw spigot surrounding said opening, an open-ended metal cap screwing upon the spigot, a blank disc and a strainer disc fitting within the cap, and a funnel adapted to be secured in position by the cap, substantially as and for the purposes specified and illustrated. (3.) For the purposes indicated, in combination, a vessel having an opening in the bottom, a screw spigot surrounding said opening, an open-ended metal cap screwing upon the spigot, and a blank disc and a strainer disc fitting within the cap, substantially as and for the purposes specified and illustrated. (4.) For the purpose indicated, in combination, a vessel having an opening in the bottom, a screw spigot surrounding said opening, an open-ended metal cap screwing upon the spigot, a blank disc fitting within the cap, and a funnel adapted to be held in position by the cap, substantially as and for the purposes specified and illustrated.

No. 17530.—10th February, 1904.—JOHN HOPE, Dental Surgeon, and WILLIAM BUTCHER, Runholder, both of Rotorua, New Zealand. An improved necktie retainer and fastener.

Claim.—A necktie-fastener comprising a tab having a buttonhole to engage with the front trouser-button of the wearer, a loop connected to the top of the tab, an elastic band passing through the said loop, a buckle upon the band for adjusting the length of the same, a loop attached to the top of the band, and a hook upon the loop engaging with the necktie, substantially as set forth.

No. 17536.—9th February, 1904.—JAMES IRVIN, of Tuamarina, Marlborough, New Zealand, Labourer. An improved coloured movable chart to illustrate the rise and fall of the tide and the change of the moon.

Claims.—(1.) A disc, with the outer edge coloured, revolving inside a coloured oval. (2.) A hole in a coloured disc revolving over a bicoloured eccentric.

No. 17539.—11th February, 1904.—ISAAC WHITEHOUSE and FREDERICK ALBERT WHITEHOUSE, trading as Isaac Whitehouse and Son, of Albert Works, Aston Road, Birmingham, Warwick, England, Brassfounders. Improvements in and relating to the valves of cocks and taps.

Claim.—In a tap or cock, the combination of a vulcanite valve with the valve-seat to form a watertight or an airtight joint in the manner illustrated and described.

No. 17542.—10th February, 1904.—OLIVER HAWKES DREWET, of Pukekohe, New Zealand, Watchmaker. An attachment to ladies’ hat-pins.

Claim.—The use of a split tube having an inner ring to provide necessary pressure at the entrance so as to give a sufficient degree of attachment to the pin, which it is intended to secure from loss, and whose point is also thereby protected by the said attachment, substantially as described and illustrated.

No. 17543.—15th February, 1904.—CHRISTIAN NISSEN, of Milton, Otago, New Zealand, Flax-miller. Improved apparatus for separating dust and the like from currents of air and the like.

Claims.—(1.) In apparatus for the purpose indicated, a chamber provided with a baffle and a door for withdrawing the ashes from the said chamber, and a flue through which the air or gases pass from the chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. (2.) The apparatus for the purpose indicated comprising, in combination, a furnace for burning oat-husks and the like, a chamber in communication with the furnace and provided with a baffle and a door, a fan, a flue connecting the chamber and the fan, a kiln, and a flue connecting the fan and the kiln, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. (3.) The combination and arrangement of parts comprising the improved apparatus for separating dust and the like from currents of air and the like, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
