CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1903, was estimated to be 2,762, of whom 31 were females.

REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population of the colony increased by 24,575, or at the rate of 3·04 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 13,300, and excess of arrivals over departures 11,275. The birth-rate for the colony in 1903 was 26·61 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 10·40, as against 25·89 and 10·50 respectively in 1902.

The deaths in 1903 (8,527) exceeded the number registered in 1902 (8,375) by 152, but there was a decrease in the rate per 1,000 from 10·50 to 10·40, as stated above.

The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1903 is estimated at 6,780, giving a rate of 8·27* per 1,000 of the mean population, against 6,394 and 8·01, the actual number and rate in 1902.
