In the first table are given the deaths and death-rates for each of the four cities, for the suburban boroughs severally, and for each city with its suburban towns. As regards Auckland and Christchurch, the whole of the area usually recognised as suburban has not yet been brought under municipal government, and the vital statistics do not deal with such portions as still remain in road districts. But the omission is not very important, for there are in either case quite enough suburbs included within borough boundaries to give a fair idea of the death-rate of Greater Auckland and Greater Christchurch. As further boroughs are formed the vital statistics will be made to include them.
The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the rate at Dunedin, but raises it at Auckland and Wellington.
Death-rates per 1,000 of Population.
Auckland City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·84
and five suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·90
Wellington City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·79
and two suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·80
Christchurch City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·99
and one suburban borough .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·99
Dunedin City .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·27
and eight suburban boroughs .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·88
Including the suburbs, the rate at Christchurch is the highest, and at Wellington the lowest.
Compared with August, 1902, the results are,—
Auckland and suburbs .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1902. 1903.
Wellington and suburbs .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·35 0·90
Christchurch and suburbs .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·50 0·80
Dunedin and suburbs .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 1·37 0·99
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 0·99 0·88
Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—Measles caused 4 deaths at Christchurch in August; scarlet fever, 1 at Auckland, 1 at Christchurch, and 2 at Dunedin; influenza, 1 at Dunedin, and diphtheria the same. The mortality from diarrhoeal complaints at the four chief centres was very light last month, including 2 deaths at Auckland and 1 at Wellington.
Constitutional Diseases.—There were 32 deaths, 13 being attributable to cancer, 12 to phthisis, 3 to other tubercular diseases, and 4 to diabetes.
Local Diseases.—Of 110 deaths, 29 were from diseases of the nervous system, 23 of the circulatory, 27 of the respiratory, and 20 of the digestive systems. There was 1 death from disease of the lymphatic, 7 of the urinary, 2 of the reproductive, and 1 of the integumentary systems.
Violent Deaths.—Of 11 deaths at the chief centres, 7 were accidental, 1 homicidal, and 3 suicidal. Of accidental, 1 was from fracture, 3 from burns, 1 from drowning, 1 from overlying, and 1 from a needle in the knee. The homicide was effected by strangulation, 1 of the suicides by throat-cutting, the remaining 2 by poison.
