The total population of Auckland and its suburbs was 67,226 persons, and that of Christchurch with its complete suburbs amounted to 57,041 persons, at the Census of March, 1901.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 454, against 458 in May—a decrease of 4. The deaths in June were 217, an increase of 31 on the number in May. Of the total deaths, males contributed 124, females 93. Sixty-eight of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 31·34 per cent. of the whole number; 57 of these were under one year of age.

There were fifty-two deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Nine men, 65, 69 (two), 70 (two), 71, 73, 77, 78, and seven women, 74, 78, 80, 84, 86, 90, 92, died at Auckland; three men, 65, 80, 83, and three women, 66, 68, 73, at Wellington; four men, 65, 71, 75, 77, and five women, 73, 75, 82, 84, 93, at Christchurch; and ten men, 66 (two), 68, 71, 73, 75, 76, 77, 80, 94, and eleven women, 65, 69 (two), 70 (two), 72 (two), 78, 82, 83, 84, at Dunedin.
