Notice to Mariners No. 35 of 1903.

SHOAL OFF DOG ISLAND, SOUTH-EAST OF BLUFF HARBOUR.

THE Harbourmaster of Bluff Harbour reports that a shoal carrying only 18 ft. at L.W.O.S. exists to E.N.E. of Dog Island.

The following sextant angles were taken when over the shoal :—

Extreme S. end of Bluff and W. end of Bird Island, 91° 30′; W. end of Bird Island and N.E. end of Green Island, 52° 4′.

These angles place the position of shoal 2·4 miles N. 78° E. of Dog Island Lighthouse.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty charts Nos. 2540 and 2553; “New Zealand Pilot,” 7th edition, chapter ix., page 311.

SOUTH AMERICA.

Magellan Strait.

CAPE VIRGINS.—A tel. station is est. on the cape (52° 20′ S., 68° 20′ W.) at the entr. to Magellan Strait. Also, a shipwrecked mariners’ refuge is est. at the same place. April.

NORTH AMERICA.—WEST COAST.

Oregon.

COLUMBIA RIVER BAR.—The following alterations have been made in the lts. in entr. to the river: 1. Two F. red elec. leading-lts. are exh. from white poles at Astoria to lead through the Short Cut Chan., the front lt., elev. 40 ft., in 46° 11½′ N., 123° 49¾′ W., on the centre of the wharf, 6 cables N. 54° W. from Coxcomb Hill; and the rear lt., elev. 250 ft., 4⁵⁄₁₀ cables S. 31° W. from the front lt. In line S. 31° W. they lead through Short Cut Chan. 2. A F. white lt., elev. 10 ft., named Upper Gauge Pile Post lt., is exh. from a single pile beacon, in 15 ft. water, with Tongue Pt., N. 78° E., 12³⁄₁₀ cables, and the house on Portuguese Pt., N. 4° W. 3. Silva de Grace F. white lt., about 17 cables S.-wrd. from Tongue Pt., and the F. white lt. which formed the rear lt. of the Tongue Pt. leading lts., 6¾ cables S. 15° W. from Tongue Pt., have both been disc. April.

Vancouver Island.

ESQUIMALT ROADSTEAD.—PROHIBITED ANCHORAGE.—Annually, from 15th May to 15th Sept., a portion of the roadstead is set apart for artillery practice, and vessels arriving in Royal Roads must anchor to the wrd. of a line from Duntze Head (48° 25¾′ N., 123° 26¾′ W.) to Race Rks. lt.-h., and not less than one mile from Duntze Head. Vessels anchored to the erd. of this limit will be given 24 hours’ notice to move out of the danger zone, and any charges incurred in moving such vessel shall be borne by the vessel. Mariners are therefore cautioned not to anchor in Esquimalt Roads or Royal Bay, between the above-mentioned dates, within one mile of Duntze Head or with it bearing nrd. or wrd. of N. 2° E., the direction of the line joining Duntze Head and Race Rks. lt.-h. April.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

Hawaiian (Sandwich) Islands.

OAHU.—WAIALUA AND WAIANAE.—The two F. white leading-lts. (21° 36′ N., 158° 6′ W.) exh. at Waialua Bay have been disc. Also, the lt. exh. at the end of the pt. (21° 26′ N., 158° 11¾′ W.) at Waianae, when steamers were expected, has been disc. April.

NEW ZEALAND.

ADMIRALTY CHARTS that have received large corrections:—No. 2035. New chart, New Zealand, North Isl., Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel Harb. March.

CHINA SEA, ETC.

Philippine Islands.

KALAMIANES GROUP.—A shoal about ⅓ mile in extent, carrying about 4½ to 8 fms., lies in approx. 12° 13′ N., 119° 42¼′ E., N.-wrd. of the Kalamianes Group, with Haycock or Malajon Isl., S. 55° E., 7 miles, and Dimipak or High Isl., N. 51° E. Discoloured water was seen to the wrd. of this position, but was not exam. April.

SAMAR.—JANABATAS CHAN.—The Coastguard s.s. “Busuanga” reports that in approx. 11° 28¾′ N., 124° 44¾′ E., in the wrn. approach to Janabatas Chan., with Kananay lt., S. 71° E., 6¼ miles, and the hill (1,480 ft.) over Naparican Pt., N. 12° E., the water shoaled suddenly from 15 to 6 fms. for one or two casts of the lead, and then deepened suddenly to no btm. at 20 fms. April.

SEBU.—BOGO BAY.—A small reef, with a least depth of 11 ft., is reported to lie in approx. 11° 8′ N., 124° 4′ E., in the approach to the bay, about 1½ miles wrd. of the track recommended for vessels passing along the coast. Mariners are therefore cautioned against keeping to the wrd. of the above track, especially as there is said to be a considerable set in and out of Bogo Bay. April.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

Borneo.

LABUAN.—PULO PAPPAN LT.—This lt. (5° 15′ N., 115° 16′ E.) on Pulo Pappan, Victoria Harb. approach, has been altered from F. red to a F. white lt., vis. from N. 55° W., through N. and E., to S. 35° W., but obsc. over Pulo Pappan, R. 10 miles. April.

Malacca Strait, &c.

SINGAPORE STRAIT.—A red lt.-buoy, exh. an occ. white lt., is moored in approx. 1° 15′ N., 103° 45¾′ E., off the S.-ern pt. of Cyrene Shoal, in the approach to New or Keppel Harb., with the ern.-most white beacon on Cyrene Shoal, N. 20° W., one cable, and the wrn.-most white beacon on the same shoal, S. 88° W. April.

A white lt.-buoy exh. an occ. white lt., vis. 10 secs., ecl. 10 secs., R. 5 miles, is moored in 10 fms. exper. in approx. 1° 11½′ N., 103° 53′ E., 4 cables N. 65° W. of Batu Beranti, Batam Bay. April.

INDIAN OCEAN.

Bay of Bengal.

ST. MARTIN’S REEF.—A recent exam. of this reef shows that it is a long ridge of rks., one of which is awash at L.W. springs, and lies in approx. 20° 36¾′ N., 92° 12¾′ E., 2½ miles N. 58° E. from the position shown on the Admiralty charts, and 5¾ miles S. 73° W. from the nrn. extr. of St. Martin’s Isl. Foul ground extends 4 cables S. 76° W., 6 cables S. 13° E., 4 cables N. 76° E., and 2⁴⁄₁₀ miles N. 13° W. from the rk. awash. The reef does not usually break in the N.E. monsoon season, but always does so when there is any swell, or in heavy weather. April.

RANGOON RIVER ENTR.—Spit lt.-v, exh. a F. white lt., R. 12 miles, is replaced on its station 200 ft. S. 19° W. from its former position (16° 27′ N., 96° 22′ E.), and the temp. lt.-v. has been withdrawn. April.

SANTABILLI.—On 1st July, 1903, this F. white lt. is to be replaced by a group-fl. white fl. showing a group of 2 fls. every 10 secs., elev. 140 ft. above H.W., R. 18 miles, exh. from a lt.-h. 73 ft. high, in 18° 4′ N., 83° 38½′ E., on the beach, S. 48° E. from the present lt.-h. April.

AFRICA.

BRITISH AND PORTUGUESE COLONIES.—STANDARD TIME.—From 1st March, 1903, the Governments of Cape Colony, Transvaal, Orange River Colony, Rhodesia, and the Government of Portuguese E. Africa, have agreed that the time of the 30th meridian of E. long., or 2 hours fast on Gr. M. T.
