“The Agricultural and Pastoral Statistics Act, 1895.”—Notice No. 684.—Estimated Yields.

Department of Agriculture, Wellington, 28th January, 1902.

THE following table gives the area of wheat, oats, and barley for threshing, and the estimated yields; also the wheat on hand, as at 31st October, 1901. Owing to the very dry weather experienced, a portion of the areas returned at the time of the collection of the statistics as “For threshing” has since been consumed by stock. The total for the colony, thus dealt with, is estimated at 9,000 acres.

In the New Zealand Gazette of 24th June, 1901, the wheat on hand, available for all purposes, as from 28th February, 1901, was stated at .. .. .. .. 8,620,659 Bushels.

This has been disposed of as follows:—

For seed, 167,474 acres, at 2 bushels per acre .. .. .. 334,948 Bushels.
Consumption for population of 820,000, at 6 bushels, for 8 months (28th February, 1901, to 31st October, 1901) .. .. .. 3,280,000
Wheat and flour exported from 28th February, 1901, to 31st October, 1901 .. .. .. 2,100,347 Bushels.

Leaving on hand at 31st October, 1901 .. .. .. .. .. 2,907,553

Amount actually returned at 31st October, 1901 .. .. .. .. .. 3,182,007

Apparent surplus.. .. .. .. .. 274,454

A surplus of 274,454 bushels is shown, according to the amount returned. This may be due to the fact that the wheat on hand, unthreshed, has been overestimated, or that the yield last year was underestimated.

JOHN D. RITCHIE,
Secretary for Agriculture.
