No. 14290.—28th November, 1901.—WILLIAM ANDREWS and ARTHUR WARD BEAVEN, trading as “Andrews and Beaven,” of South Belt, Christchurch, New Zealand, Agricultural Engineers. Improved crushing, cleaning, separating, and elevating apparatus for employment in connection with chaff-cutters.*
Claims.—(1.) In combination with a chaff-cutting apparatus to which grain in oat-sheaf chaff and knots in the straw thereof are crushed simultaneously with the cutting of the sheaves into chaff, substantially as specified. (2.) The combination for the purpose indicated of a machine for cutting chaff, riddles receiving and operating upon the cut material, rollers for crushing grain and heavy parts of the chaff, means for conducting material to the rollers, a fan operating upon the main body of the chaff and withdrawing dust and like particles therefrom, a pocket receiving the chaff, and means by which it is conducted therefrom to mingle with material which has passed through the rollers, and a conveyor for carrying away the mixed material, substantially as specified and illustrated. (3.) The combination for the purpose indicated of a machine for cutting chaff, crushing-rollers designed to operate upon grain and heavy parts of the chaff, means for conveying material to the crushing-rollers and for mingling the main body of the chaff with material which has passed through said crushing-rollers. (4.) The combination for the purpose indicated of a machine for cutting chaff and crushing-rollers designed to operate upon grain and heavy particles separated for the purpose from the cut material, substantially as specified.

No. 14306.—4th December, 1901.—JAMES BARCLAY JACKSON, of Motu, Gisborne, New Zealand, Road-overseer. An improved earth-scoop.*
Claims.—(1.) A scoop formed with an open front and with a hinged back, and provided with grooved wheels loosely mounted on each side thereof, in combination with a carrying-frame mounted upon running wheels at its forward end, and composed of upwardly and forwardly inclined side pieces formed with depressions near their forward ends upon which the grooved wheels of the scoop may rest and run, and means whereby the scoop may be locked to the back end of the frame, as and for the purposes set forth. (2.) A carrying-frame for earth scoops, such frame consisting of upwardly and forwardly inclined side pieces joined together at their ends by crossbars, and supported upon running wheels at its forward end and upon sliding shoes at its back end, the side pieces of the frame being formed with depressions therein near their upper ends, as and for the purposes specified. (3.) An earth-scoop provided with loosely mounted grooved wheels on each side thereof, and carried upon a carrying-frame supported upon running wheels, and consisting of upwardly and forwardly inclined side pieces joined together at their extremities by crossbars, and depending hooks secured to each side of the scoop and adapted to engage with the crossbar at the back end of the frame, as and for the purposes set forth. (4.) A scoop formed with an open front and hinged back, and provided with guiding-stilts loosely hinged to the sides thereof, and with a loosely fitting crossbar joining the stilts and bearing against the hinged back of the scoop so as to prevent the same from opening, as specified. (5.) The general arrangement, construction, and combination of parts in my improved earth-scoop, as described and explained, as illustrated in the drawings, and for the several purposes set forth.

No. 14313.—4th December, 1901.—CHARLES ADOLPHUS LOADER, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Carpenter. Improved spraying-machine.*
Claims.—(1.) The general construction, arrangement, and combination of parts composing my improved spraying-machine, all substantially as and for the purposes described with reference to the drawings. (2.) In a spraying-machine operated by compressed air, an internal pipe adapted to reach above the level of the liquid in said machine, and provided with a perforated end adapted to lie on the bottom of said machine, and connected with an outlet-pipe, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

Claims.—(1.) The general construction, arrangement, and combination of parts composing my “improvements in chimneys,” all substantially as and for the purposes described with reference to the drawings. (2.) In combination, metal tubing adapted to form the flue of a chimney and a drainpipe adapted to surround same at the roof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. (3.) In combination, metal tubing adapted to form the flue of a chimney, a drainpipe adapted to surround same at the roof, and an external casing for the head of said chimney, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. (4.) In combination, metal tubing adapted to form the flue of a chimney, a drainpipe adapted to surround same at the roof, an external casing for the head of said chimney, and a casing to said flue between the ceiling and the square breast of said chimney, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. (5.) In combination, metal tubing adapted to form the flue of a chimney, a drainpipe adapted to surround same at the roof, an external casing for the head of said chimney, a casing to said flue between the ceiling and the square breast of said chimney, and upwardly extended ends to said breastwork, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

An improved attachment for raising, lowering, and checking Venetian and other blinds.*
Claims.—(1.) In an attachment for raising, lowering, and checking Venetian and other blinds by the use of a single cord, the roller a, with reduced portion a 1, as illustrated and described. (2.) In an attachment for raising, lowering, and checking Venetian and other blinds by the use of a single cord, the ratchet wheel a 4, secured to small portion of roller a 1, as illustrated and described. (3.) In an attachment for raising, lowering, and checking Venetian and other blinds by the use of a single cord, the pawl-lever c, with horizontal extension provided with slotted openings through which the cord b passes, in combination with the steel-wire spring c 2, as illustrated and described. (4.) In an attachment for raising, lowering, and checking Venetian and other blinds by the use of a single cord, the general arrangement of the several parts set forth in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 inclusive on the sheet of drawings, forming a complete apparatus for raising, lowering, and checking Venetian and other blinds by the use of a single cord, substantially as described and illustrated.

Claims.—(1.) The general construction, arrangement, and combination of parts composing my improvements in chimneys, all substantially as and for the purposes described with reference to the drawings. (2.) In combination, a chimney-flue consisting of drain-pipes laid end to end, a surrounding metal casing to said flue adapted to rest on the top of the square breastwork of the chimney, an external casing for the head of said chimney adapted to be secured to a roof, a connecting-piece at the exit of said flue between said external casing and the flange of an adjacent pipe, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

No. 14349.—18th December, 1901.—FRED SMITH, of Hokitika, New Zealand, Miner. Improvements relating to dredging-machinery.*
Claims.—(1.) In dredging-machinery, in combination, a force-pump capable of throwing a jet of water, a flexible hose, a pipe attached to the side of the dredge-ladder, a sheath protecting the said pipe and nozzles whereby a stream of water may be thrown at different angles below the surface of the water against the face cut by the dredge-buckets, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. (2.) The improvements relating to dredging-machinery comprising the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as and for the purposes described, and illustrated in the drawing.
