Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.
RANFURLY, Governor.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the fifteenth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and two; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

This section is situated on the Karetu Road, between the Turakina River and Mangamahoe Stream. The access is from Hunterville, which is about twenty-five miles distant, via the Ongo and Turakina Valley Road for about eighteen miles, thence by the Karetu Road for seven miles. The Ongo and Turakina Valley Roads are formed for dray traffic, but the Karetu Road is only passable for horse traffic. The section comprises rough hilly country, with good leading ridges, mostly running north and south. The frontage is rough, but good building-sites can be had back from the road. The soil is of fairly good quality, resting on papa formation. The forest is fairly heavy on the spurs, but light in the valleys, and comprises rimu, matai, hinau, tawa, maire, and kahikatea, with thick undergrowth of the usual kind. The section is fairly well watered by small streams. The elevation ranges from 1,700 ft. to 2,100 ft. above sea-level. The improvements comprise 30 acres felled and partly grassed (partly overgrown), valued at £30.

The access to this section is from Raetihi, which is about nine miles distant via the Raetihi–Ohura and Middle Roads, which are formed and metalled for about three miles and a half; the rest is formed dray-road for about two miles and formed bridle-track to within about a mile of the section; the last mile is not formed. The section comprises flat and undulating land. The soil is of good quality, resting on sandstone formation. The forest is heavy throughout, comprising chiefly rimu, matai, and kahikatea, with thick undergrowth of usual kind. The section is not watered by any streams. The elevation is about 2,000 ft. above sea-level.

A rough bush section, somewhat steep and broken, having a southerly aspect. It contains a large area of light bush that can be cleared easily, and the soil is fairly good. It is well watered, and is situated about three miles from Hunt’s Road Railway-station on a fair road. Valuation for improvements, £10.
