PURSUANT to the provisions of "The Rating on Unimproved Value Act, 1896," I hereby give notice that at a poll taken at Hastings on the 14th day of July, 1902, on the proposal to bring the said Act into force in the Borough of Hastings, the number of votes recorded for and against the proposal were as follows:—

As the number of votes recorded against the proposal exceed those recorded for it, I hereby declare the proposal to be rejected.

MANDEVILLE AND RANGIORA RIVER BOARD.
LAND TO BE TAKEN FOR PUBLIC WORK.
NOTICE is hereby given, in accordance with "The Public Works Act, 1894," that it is the intention of the Mandeville and Rangiora River Board to take, under the provisions of the said Act, one acre one rood thirty-eight perches, belonging to one Richard Evans, being part of Rural Section 7407, the said parcel of land proposed to be so taken being bounded on the east by No. 1 Drain from the south-eastern corner to the north-eastern of the said section, thence along the northern boundary a distance of three chains, thence in a straight line to a point fifty links from the south-eastern corner of the said section, thence along the southern boundary to the starting-point; a survey plan of which said land so to be taken is open to inspection by all persons at the office, in High Street, Rangiora, of the Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board during office hours.
The said Board propose to execute thereon the following works—namely, to make a ditch to bank and erect a fence along the western boundary of the land so to be taken; also to clear away as much of the willows and other trees as may be necessary to provide a better channel or outlet for the escape of flood-water from the River Cust.
All persons having any well-grounded objections to the execution of such work or the taking of the said land are required to set forth the same in writing, and to send such writing within forty days from the first publication of this notice to the Mandeville and Rangiora River Board.

SUBSCRIPTIONS.—The subscription is at the rate of 30s. per annum, PAYABLE IN ADVANCE. A less period than three months cannot be subscribed for.
Single copies of the Gazette, 6d. each.
Advertisements are charged at the rate of 6d. per line for the first insertion, and 3d. per line for the second and any subsequent insertion.
Statements under the Mining Act are uniformly charged 23s.
All advertisements should be written on one side of the paper, and signatures, &c., should be written in a legible hand.
The number of insertions required must be written across the face of the advertisement.
The New Zealand Gazette is published on Thursday evening in each week, and notices for insertion must be received by the Government Printer before three o'clock of the day preceding publication.
Communications should be addressed to the Government Printer, Wellington, to whom post-office money-orders should be made payable. Cheques should be crossed "Public a/c," and exchange added.
Postage- or duty-stamps cannot be received in payment from any place at which postal notes or post-office orders are issued.
Prepayment may be demanded in any case. In order to prevent delay in publication a sufficient remittance should accompany every advertisement. Any surplus will be returned with receipted account.
