*The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics. The total population of Auckland and its suburbs was 67,226 persons, and that of Christchurch with its complete suburbs amounted to 57,041 persons, at the Census of March, 1901.

Deaths occurring at hospitals, of persons not residents of the borough wherein the hospital is situated, have been allotted in each case to the borough where the disease was contracted, and not to that in which the death actually took place.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 460, against 476 in January—a decrease of 16. The deaths in February were 208, an increase of 21 on the number in January. Of the total deaths, males contributed 115, females 93. Eighty-seven of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 41·83 per cent. of the whole number; 79 of these were under one year of age.

There were thirty-one deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Three men, 73, 74, 76, and four women, 66, 78 (two), 79, died at Auckland; seven men, 68 (two), 70, 71, 74, 83, 91, and two women, 66, 68, at Wellington; five men, 66, 69, 75, 78, 84, and one woman, 79, at Christchurch; seven men, 68 (two), 69, 75, 80 (two), 85, and two women, 77, 79, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportion per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given, registered during the Month of February, 1902.
