Note.—Two or more distinct industries were carried on at some establishments. In such cases particulars of power, hands, and plant employed, and wages paid, unless stated separately for each branch of industry, have been treated as belonging to the most important work.
The following information is supplied as to quantities of manufactures or productions in case of certain industries for which no special tables have been considered necessary:—
Coffee and spice works: 147 tons coffee, 55 tons chicory, 70 tons pepper, and 231 tons spices, &c.
Wire-works and mattress-factories: 20,925 mattresses, 2,283 gross sofa and mattress springs, &c.
Chemical-works: 5,632 tons manure, 525 tons sulphuric and muriatic acid, 3,132 dozen essences, &c.
Heel- and toe-plate works: 5,427 gross plates.
Hat and cap factories: 21,951 dozen caps, 5,910 dozen hats.
Manure-works: 2,017 tons manure, 35 tons tallow.
Paper-mills and paper bag and box manufactories: 1,750 tons paper, 799,800 boxes, 152 tons bags, 2,290,000 bags
Range- and stove-making factories: 7,951 ranges, 254 stoves, 1,106 colonial ovens, 459 coppers.
Sausage-skin factories: £30,674 worth sausage-skins.
Basket and perambulator factories: 1,952 perambulators and go-carts, 7,150 baskets, £3,719 worth sundries.
Brush and broom factories: 141,926 brooms, 240,862 brushes, 2,400 bellows.
Chaff-cutting establishments: 44,115 tons chaff cut, also grain threshed, cut, and hay baled.
Haematite-paint and varnish factories: 327 tons paint, 471 gallons sheep-marking paint, 14,713 gallons varnish.
Herbal-remedies factories: £18,396 worth herbal remedies.
